On this holiday, the employees
announcement that the library’s reading
room, provided through funds raised by
various community groups, has been
named in honor of Harold W. Whitcomb,
president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc.
Dr. L. Gordon Clarke, president of the
Draper Library board, presided during
the brief program. He said the public
has responded enthusiastically to the
new library. He said that circulation
which averaged about 600 to 800 books
per month prior to the move to the new
building has risen to 2,320 for the month
of July.
Dr. Clarke expressed appreciation to
Mr. Whitcomb and Fieldcrest Mills for
making possible the new library build
ing. He then invited the visitors to in
spect the new Harold W. Whitcomb
Reading Room.
In a brief response, Mr. Whitcomb
declined any personal credit in the li
brary project. He said its success was
due to the efforts of Draper citizens who
joined together and worked hard over
a period of years in order to get a better
library.
He said Fieldcrest Mills is always glad
to give assistance when local citizens
engage in projects that are for the bet-

200 More Employees
Enroll In Credit Union
Approximately 200 new members
have joined the Fieldcrest Mills Credit
Union since July 1. Total membership
has reached 4,065, representing 68 per
cent of all employees eligible to join.
The Credit Union has had a spec
tacular growth since it was organized
at the Leaksville-Spray-Draper plants
and offices in 1958. The Credit Union
was subsequently extended to employees
in all North Carolina and Virginia
plants, including the Kimberly Yarn
Mills subsidiary in Mount Holly, and
to all sales personnel.
Each month has seen more employees
join the Credit Union to save for school
expenses, winter fuel bills, taxes and
for Christmas. Many are saving for the
children’s education, to make the down
payment on a home or a car and for
other long-range purposes.
Because the money is saved through
payroll deduction it usually is never
missed. With the Credit Union’s four per
cent dividends the savings are growing
all the time.
Fieldcrest employees who are not
members are invited to join the Credit
Union and take advantage of the op
portunity it offers for easy, systematic

25- Year Picnics
The company has announced that the
former general picnic or meeting for all
members of the 25-Year Club this year
will be replaced by separate picnics for
the club members in the various mill
areas.
The smaller, localized picnics can be
handled better and will be easier for the
members to attend. Also, they will be
more enjoyable and provide greater op
portunities for fellowship.
The Towel Mill members will have a
picnic at the former Fieldale baseball
park Saturday, September 7, starting at
4:30 p. m.
Club members at the Blanket and
Sheeting Mills will have an outing Sat
urday, October 5. The program will be
held in the Draper Junior High School
auditorium at 4:30 p.m., followed by a
supper in the cafeteria of the new Dra
per Elementary School.
The dates and places of the picnics for
25-Year Club members in other mills
will be announced soon.
