He told of his interest in the Draper com munity and said he was happy that Fieldcrest had played a part in the li brary project. In presenting the key to the library building to Mayor Eldred Cherry, Mr. Whitcomb congratulated Draper people on having such a modern library and said he hoped that it would be used and enjoyed by the community for years to come. Mayor Cherry on behalf of the town expressed appreciation to Mr. Whitcomb and Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., for Mr. Whit comb’s interest and the company’s gen erosity and cooperation in improving the library. The Draper Library was organized April 16, 1941 by a group of interested Draper citizens under the leadership of the late Miss Marianne R. Martin, coun ty librarian at the time. For many years the library was inadequately housed in a room at the YMCA. Draper civic groups at various times raised funds for the betterment of the library. Recognizing the need for more suit able quarters, Fieldcrest Mills offered Its former Personnel Office at 122 Mill Avenue for use as a library. Fieldcrest completely renovated the brick building and installed combination automatic heating and air conditioning. The library also received a new cir culation desk, shelving, tables, and chairs. Funds raised by the community provided draperies and the Harold W Whitcomb Reading Room. This room, walnut paneled, carpeted with a gold shade of Karastan carpeting and tastefully furnished with loun^e chairs, tables and lamps, is the pride of the County Library System. All these furnishings were paid for by funds raised in the community. A metal plaque placed over the door designates it as the Harold W. Whi“ Reading Room.
