Secretary of the Treasury and member
of the Atomic Energy Commission, has
been elected a director of Fieldcrest
Mills, Inc. Harold W. Whitcomb, presi
dent of the company, announced the
election following the April 20 meeting
of the directors.
Mr. Graham, a business and financial
consultant, was named to high positions
by two U. S. Presidents and served un
der botli Democratic and Republican ad
ministrations. In 1948 he was nominated
to be Assistant Secretary of the Treas
ury and he served in this capacity until
1953.

Energy Commission by President
Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957 and con
tinued into the Kennedy administration,
serving until June, 1962.
His service to the federal government
began shortly after World War II. While
on terminal leave as a naval officer he
was asked to become assistant to the
late O. Max Gardner, former Governor

of North Carolina who at that time was
Undersecretary of the Treasury.
As assistant to the Undersecretary,
Mr. Graham replaced James E. Webb,
another North Carolinian, who was
named Director of the Budget and who
now is head of the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration.

Lived In Winston-Salem
Although he now lives in Washington,
Mr. Graham for many years was a resi
dent of Winston-Salem. His father, the
late Joseph L. Graham, was an officer
and director of the R. J. Reynolds To
bacco Co. and a founder of the Security
Life & Trust Company.
John Graham was associated with the
Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company
in Winston-Salem and Louisville, Ky.,
and 1936-1942 was a partner in the
Winston-Salem firm of Vaughn & Gra
ham, specializing in tax law.
He received his B. S. in commerce
degree from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. He attended
the Harvard Law School and the Uni
versity of Virginia and was admitted
to the North Carolina Bar in 1935.
Mr. Graham served as an officer in
the navy for four years during World
War II, advancing in rank from lieu
tenant to commander. He is married to
the former Elizabeth Breckenridge and
they have four daughters.
