Organization Changes Made At Fieldale
Purcell Named General Manager
Of Towel Manufacturing; Stone
And Caraway Get Promotions
D. A. Purcell, formerly manager cf
the Fieldale Towel Mill, was appointed
general manager—towel manufacturing
effective September 23. He will have
responsibility for the Fieldale and Mus
cogee operations, as well as the Mount
Holly and Worthville spinning plants.
He continues to report to A. L. Jackson,
division vice president—dom.sstics man
ufacturing.
T. H. Sherrill, manager of Muscogee
Mills, will report to Mr. Purcell, as will
E. A. Clark, superintendent of the
Worthville Plant, and T. E. Boyce, sup -
erintendent of the Mount Holly Spin
ning Mill.
W. O. Stone, Jr., formerly superin
tendent of sewing, shipping, warehous
ing and customer service at the Fieldale
Towel Mill, was appointed assistant
manager of the Fieldale Towel Mill, re
porting to Mr. Purcell.
D. E. Simons, superintendent of man
ufacturing and G. L. Caraway, Jr., for
merly assistant superintendent of Field
ale Towel Mill shipping and warehous
ing who was appointed superintendent
of shipping, warehousing and customer
service, will report to Mr. Stone. The
Sewing Department will report to the
superintendent—manufacturing.
Mr. Purcell, a native of Rockingham
County, N. C., received his B. S. degree
in textile manufacturing at North Caro
lina State College where he graduated
with honors and was elected to Phi
Kappa Phi, a national honorary society.
He was associated with textile com
panies in various southern states prior
to joining Fieldcrest Mills in 1938.
He was superintendent of the Blanket
and Sheeting Mills at Draper and later
was given additional responsibility for
finishing, warehousing and shipping op
erations. He has been manager of the
Fieldale Towel Mill since 1955 and in
recent years has had the additional re
sponsibility of the Mount Holly Spin
ning Mill.
Mr. Stone is a native of Newberry,
S. C. and a graduate of Clemson College
with a B. S. degree in chemistry. He
enrolled at the Institute of Textile
Technology soon after his graduation
at Clemson, and received his M.S. de
gree in textile technology in .lune, 1957.
He joined Fieldcrest immediately as
a quality control engineer in the Re
search and Quality Control Department
at Spray. He left shortly afterwards for
six months of service as an officer in
the Army Signal Corps.
Soon after his return he became a
trainee assigned to the Draper Mills.
He served as foreman of the Blanket
Mill Cotton Spooling, Winding and
Warping Department, foreman of the
Wool Spinning Department, and as staff
assistant to the superintendent. He be
came assistant superintendent at the
Towel Mill in October, 1962 and was
appointed superintendent of sewing,
shipping, warehousing and customer
service January 11, 1965.
Mr. Caraway is a native of Montana
but grew up in Mount Airy. He studied
business administration after his grad-
