He landed in ^^banon with the airborne troops, cov- j the rebellion there, the tensions of °*'dan, and flying with carrier-based (Continued on Page Seven) Fieldcrest Is Welcomed To Laurel Hi An official welcome to Laurel Hill and Scotland County, where Fieldcrest recently bought a mill, was extended to Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., by local govern ment officials, the area’s industry lead ers, the Chamber of Commerce and rep resentatives of the community’s “aid civic club members”. Fifteen Fieldcrest and Laurelcrest Carpets executives were guests at a luncheon program at Holiday Inn which featured talks by the community lead ers and responses by the Fieldcrest and Laurelcrest officials. Presiding at the luncheon was Clinton V. Willis, president of the Chamber of Commerce, who praised the Fieldcrest organization and welcomed the company to the Laurinburg-Scotland County area. W. Charles Barrett, mayor (pro tern) of Laurinburg, extended a welcome to Fieldcrest on behalf of local government officials. He was followed by Kenneth S. Etheridge who offered additional words of praise and gave a warm greet ing from the many civic clubs of Scot land County and Maxton. Halbert M. Jones, president of Waver- ly Mills, spoke highly of the Fieldcrest organization and the men who guide it. On behalf of other industry in the community, he gave words of welcome along with expressions of friendship and mutual understanding among textile people. The visiting Fieldcrest and Laurel crest officials were introduced by Rob ert J. Saunders, who was formerly with Morgan Mills, Inc. and who is now gen eral manager of plant operations for Laurelcrest. Harold W. Whitcomb, president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., in a brief respon ,e, told of the company’s pleasure in be coming a part of the economic and civic life of Scotland County. He discussed plans for the Laurelcrest division and said, “We believe that eventually this operation will prove a valuable addition to our already prominent position in the floor covering market.” G. William Moore, executive vice president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., de scribed the company’s sales and mer chandising activities. He spoke about what he believes to be a gradual im provement from a slackening in the (Continued on Page Three) Deadline Nearing For Filing Tax Returns Have you prepared your federal in come tax return yet? If not, the time is getting close. And returns prepared in haste are more likely to have errors in them. You can save the Internal Rev enue Service and yourself valuable time and money by carefully checking your tax return before you mail it. The following check list will be help ful: 1. Check arithmetic. 2. Attach Forms W-2 from all em ployers. 3. Sign your return. Both husband and wife must sign a joint return. 4. Print or type name and address, including zip code. 5. Use correct tax table. 6. Total your deductions if you item ize them on page 2. 7. List your Social Security number correctly. Both husband’s and wife’s number should be reported on the joint return. Remember that for income tax pur poses a wife is never a dependent of her husband. The exemption allowed her is based upon the marital relationship, not on dependency. A husband may claim his wife’s ex emption on his separate return only if she has no income and is not the de pendent of another taxpayer. Husbands and wives may file joint returns even though one of them has no income. If the wife had income in any amount, the husband can claim his wife’s ex emption only by filing a joint return with her. On a joint return, income and deductions of both husband and wife must be included, and both must sign the return. Do you have a refund due on your federal income tax return?
