XXVI Spray, N, C., September 25, 1967 NO. 6 $1,247,000 Paid To Pension Trust Fund payment Covering Year 1966 Brings Value Of Pension Trust To More Than $15 Million The Company last week made an ad- ditional contribution of $1,247,000 to the Fieldcrest Mills Pension Trust, ringing the market value of the trust tund to in excess of $15,000,000. The payment by Fieldcrest Mills, Inc,, ^vering the year 1966, was made to the Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, Winston-Salem, trustee of the pension tund. Money which the Company pays to the fund is taken from the Com pany’s earnings and can be used only tor payment of employees’ pensions. The huge amounts paid by the Com pany for the Pension Plan make it a oostly employee benefit, which must be taken into account in any comparison of Fieldcrest wages and fringe benefits With those of other companies. Since the plan was put into effect in “^3, a total of 1577 men and women nave retired under its provisions and t079 of these are now living and draw- Credit Union Opened To Laurelcrest Plant Membership in the Fieldcrest Mills fedlt Union was extended to the haurgicrest Carpets plant at Laurel Hill Effective Monday, September 18, and **'nre than 50 per cent of the production ^••iployees joined the first day. M was expected that a substantial hmber of additional membership ®ards—particularly from salaried em- ®foyees—would be turned in during the ®hiainder of the week, p Ih commenting on the Credit Union • A. Brodle, personnel manager at the f^^urelcrest plant, said: Our employees were very apprecia ble of the Credit Union installation and jje Personnel Office was delighted with response it received. “We feel that the Credit Union will •''■ovide many benefits for the people M Laurelcrest and we invite all em- ®‘®yees to join if they have not already '*®ne so.” ing monthly pension checks. Pensions paid to the Company’s retired employees for the last year totaled approximately $600,000. The pensions paid under the Plan are in addition to, and completely sepa rate from, any payments received through Social Security. The Company, of course, also pays half of the cost of the employees’ Social Security benefits. Widely recognized as one of the first and best in the textile industry, the Pension Plan was installed 24 years ago when employee pension plans were comparatively rare in the industry. Monthly Pension For Life Upon retirement, employees receive a check each month for life from the Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, the trustee of the Pension Fund. The amount of the pension is based on the em ployee’s continuous service with the Company and his career earnings as a Fieldcrest employee. Because membership in the Pension Plan is such a big financial asset to the employee and will be so vital to his fu ture well-being, every employee should familiarize himself with his rights un der the Plan and also with the require ments for the various benefits. Employees have received booklets which describe and explain the work ings of the retirement program. It would be well for every employee to review the booklet from time to time and keep a copy at his home. If the booklet has been lost, a re placement may be obtained at the Per sonnel Office. Further, mill supervision or the Industrial Relations staff stand ready to answer any questions and to give assistance to employees in advance planning for retirement. Flu Shots Will Be Offered Employees The Fieldcrest Medical Department announces that plans have been made for the administration of influenza vac cine for employees in the Eden (Leaks- ville-Spray-Draper) area. The vaccine will be available without charge to em ployees who wish to receive it. Partici pation will be voluntary. Schedules for the immunizations at the various mills will be published in the October 9 issue of The Mill Whistle and posted on the mill bulletin boards. Dr. A. D. Gullett, Fieldcrest medical director, and nurses from the Medical Department will give the shots to em ployees in Eden and those at the Worth- ville Spinning Mill. Given At Each Location Employees at other locations also will be given the free flu shots, made avail able by the Company through local doc tors and nurses. Notices have been or will be posted in the respective mills, showing the times and places at which the shots will be given . According to the United States Pub lic Health Service, rather severe out breaks of influenza are expected this winter, particularly in the eastern part of the United States. During major influenza outbreaks, especially those caused by type A vi ruses, increased mortality has regularly been recognized in persons over 45 years of age. This association has been par ticularly marked when underlying chronic illneses were also present in the individual. Vaccination is urged for those over age 45 and those of any age who may have a chronic disease such as heart disease, hypertension, asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and diabetes. Since the vaccine viruses are prop agated in eggs, those who are allergic or hypersensitive to eggs or egg products should not take the vaccine. Individuals who have been vaccinated since July 1963 need only take a single dose. Some Need Second Dose Individuals who have not been vac cinated since July 1963 should have an initial dose, followed by a second, two months later. Dr. Gullett said a few people taking the vaccine may experience local red ness and soreness at the site of injec tion; a few others may have a tempera ture elevation with general malaise. These reactions stem from the protein in the vaccine and are not symptoms of influenza. Aspirin effectively counter acts the effects of fever, local soreness, and general malaise, the medical direc tor said.
