Four Get Awards For 40 Years’ Service
Four employees, in four different mills
or units, have completed 40 years of
continuous service with the company.
Receiving awards for 40-year records
were Payton E. Jeffries, Central Filter
Plant; Madeline Oakley, Bedspread Mill;
Thomas A. Brame, Finisihing Mill; and
Leonard H. Earles, Bleachery.
In informal ceremonies on their an
niversary dates, each of the veteran em
ployees was presented the Fieldcrest
diamond-and-gold 40-year emblem and
a letter of commendation from Harold
W. Whitcomb, chairman of the board,
Fieldcrest Mills, Inc.
Mr. Jeffries, a native of Eden, was
first employed in the Nantucket Spin
ning Department January 30, 1928. He
then worked briefly as a weaver learn
er at the Homecrest Mill but returned
to the Nantucket Mill as a winder. In
1930, he became a warper at the old
Silk Mill and in 1940 was promoted to
assistant foreman of the Warping De
partment. He became assistant foreman
of the Winding Department at the Rayon
Mill in 1946 and continued in that posi
tion until the Synthetic Fabrics Mill was
closed in 1957. He has since worked at
the Central Filter Plant where he is a
filter operator.
Miss Oakley, born in Henry County,
Va., has continuous service of 40 years
also starting January 30, 1928 at the
Nantucket Mill, where she worked as a
winder hand. She later was transferred
to the Rhode Island Mill and worked as
a winder and as a spooler. She worked
at the old Silk Mill as a rewinder and
in the Blanket Cutting and Sewing De
partment at the Finishing Mill before
being transferred to the Bedspread Mill
Weave Room in June, 1942. She has
worked as a battery filler or magazine
filler since that time and continues to
work as a magazine filler.
Mr. Brame, a native of Eden, was
