Recent Expansion At Towel Mill
Some examples of the modern, new yarn
manufacturing machinery installed in the
Fieldale Towel Mill, Fieldale, Va., as part of
the recently-completed $5 milliooi expansion
program are pictured on these pages. The
expansion plans were announced in March,
1968, and the project completed in 1969.

to the quillers in the adjacent area.
The expansion program involved the pur
chase of additional terry looms to produce
high quality, highly-styled terry towels,
along with additional yarn manufacturing
facilities to provide yarn for the additional
looms.
The expansion project involved the con
struction of a large addition to the west side
01 the existing Carding and Spinning De
partment to house the yarn manufacturing
equipment and the building of a three-story
addition to the east side of the Finishing
Building to provide space for cutting, sew
ing, warehousing, etc. of the additional
towel production.
Included in the new yarn manufacturing
machinery were Hergeth pickers with auto
matic doffing and lap scales, replacing older
picking machinery; additional latest-type
Roberts spinning frames with Bahnson spin
ning frame cleaners; additional twisters of
the Hamel 2-for-l type, with more machines
It was announced at the start of the pro
gram that the expansion would provide
approximately 250 additional jobs when the
project was completed. This number of addi
tional employees have been employed, train
ed and are now at work at the Fieldale
Towel Mill.

Clarence G. Major joined Fieldcrest
recently as assistant foreman on the
second shift in the Drape Department
at the Bedspread Finishing Mill.
Before coming here he was a shift
overseer of sewing operations at Dan
River Mills, Danville, Va., for many
years. He is a native of Lynchburg, Va.,
and served in the Navy for three years
during World War II as a member of
the Amphibious Assault Forces in the
Pacific.
He is married to the former Irene
Hall of Blairs, Va. They have two sons
and a daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Major
at the present time live at 209 Hamlin
Avenue in Danville.
