In most of the areas where Fieldcrest employees live, householders will use the one-way mail method. They have received or will receive the forms in the mail. They will fill out the forms and have them ready for a census taker to pick-up. At every fifth household, the census taker will fill out the longer form by interview. Census takers in the one way mail areas will begin their house- to-house canvass Wednesday, April 1. In order to obtain a full picture of the American population each person in each household must be listed along with age, race, sex, marital status, and relationship to the head of the house hold. Other questions are to be asked of everyone concerning housing conditions. They include such items as the number of rooms occupied by the family, kitch en or cooking facilities, water supply, rent or ownership. The rest of the needed information will be obtained by additional questions asked one household in every five. The law requires that census questions be answered truthfully and to the best of one’s knowledge. Every question is asked because the information is need ed by some agency of the government— Federal, State, or local—to guide im portant programs in the public interest. The information is to be kept confi dential. The method of tabulation makes it impossible to pick out information on any one individual, family or busi ness. All results are tabulated by com puters, but names and addresses are not fed into the computer. No government agency may examine individual census records for any purpose whatsoever. The 1970 census will do much more than tell how large the population is. From these questionnaires will come a volume of new and vital facts about the American people and their way of life.
