Fieldale Employee Wins Banjo Playing Title
Clyde Dodson, a change fixer in the
Fieldale Towel Mill Weave Room, won
first place in the claw hammer style
banjo picking at the recent Fiddlers
Convention held at the Fieldale Ele
mentary School.
A total of 28 Blue Grass bands com
peted during the program which was
attended by over 600 persons. Banjo
competition was judged in two cate
gories, Blue Grass and claw hammer
banjo. Mr. Dodson won first prize in
the latter classification, described as
the same type of playing used by
Grandpa Jones of Grand Ole Opry
fame.
The Fiddlers Convention was spon
sored by the Fieldale Volunteer Fire
Department and the Fieldcrest Loom
Fixers Club, of Fieldale. Proceeds were
divided equally, with the firemen us
ing their part to purchase needed fire
fighting equipment and the loom fixers
using their share toward the construc
tion of a community club building.
Miss McGehee Receives Air Transport Rating
Miss Hortense McGehee has recently
received her Air Transport Rating from
the Federal Aviation Administration,
becoming one of 68 women in the Uni
ted States to have an ATR rating. This
is one of the highest flight ratings
awarded by the FAA and is required of
all commercial airline captains in the
U. S.
In addition to the ATR rating Miss
McGehee, with over 2000 hours of
flight time, holds private, commercial,
instrument and flight instructor ratings.
She is a staff member of the Depart
ment of Aviation at Ohio State Uni
versity, School of Engineering.
Her duties include instruction of
commercial and instrument student
pilots and supervision of flight instruc
tors on the Ohio State University staff
who teach primary flying.
Miss McGehee is the daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. William McGehee, of Eden.
Her father is Fieldcrest’s director of
personnel research and development.

School, Miss McGehee attended Ran
dolph Macon College for two years and
went on to the University of North
