MOORE NAMED CHAIRMAN OF BOARD
Harold W. Whitcomb Retires
As Chairman, Remains Member
Of Board Of Directors
G. William Moore was elected chair
man of the board of Fieldcrest Mills,
Inc., at the regular June meeting of the
board. Mr. Moore is also president and
chief executive officer, which position
he has held since April, 1967.
As chairman, he suceeds Harold W.
Whitcomb who is retiring after 34 years
with the company and its predecessor,
Marshall Field & Company. Mr. Whit
comb will continue to serve on the
Fieldcrest board of directors.
Mr. Moore, a native of Philadelphia
and a graduate of DePauw University,
first joined the company in its sales
organization in 1946 after completing
four years of military service with the
U. S. Marine Air Corps.
Manager of Chicago Office
He was appointed manager of the
Fieldcrest Chicago sales office in 1951
and, later in the same year, was named
manager of the blanket sales division.
In 1957 he was elected vice president
in charge of merchandising in the Field
crest sales headquarters in New York
City, and in 1963 was elected president
of the Fieldcrest Marketing Division.
He was promoted to executive vice
president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., Jan
uary 1, 1966, and moved from New
York to the Fieldcrest corporate head
quarters at Eden. He was elected pre
sident and chief executive officer April
25, 1967.
Mr. Whitcomb is a native of Concord,
N. H., and graduated from the Univer
sity of New Hampshire. He was associ
ated with Sulloway Hosiery Mills,
Franklin, N. H., in various capacities
before joining Marshall Field & Com
pany in 1936 as manager of the Dumb
Knitting Co., Pawtucket, R. I.
Came to Eden in 1937
He was moved in 1937 to the Eden
headquarters of the manufacturing di
vision of Marshall Field & Company. In
1941 he was transferred to the retail
division of the company as an executive
of the Chicago stores and in 1943 re
turned to the manufacturing division as
assistant to Luther H. Hodges, then gen
eral manager, in the New York sales
offices.
In 1945 he came back to the Eden
headquarters of the manufacturing di
vision as assistant general manager and
production manager of the manufac
turing division. He was elected division
al vice president of Marshall Field &
Company in 1946.
Upon the sale of the mills by Marshall
Field & Company October 1, 1953, Mr.
Whitcomb was elected vice president of
Fieldcrest Mills, Inc. On December 1,
1953, he became president and was
elected to the board of directors. He was
