Karastan Mill Makes Savings In Waste Employee cooperation in the waste reduction program at the Karastan Mill has resulted in a savings of $36,501, based on standard cost figures for con trollable waste. Following successful results in waste reduction in 1969, new goals were set seeking a savings of $46,559, or a 9% reduction in controllable waste during 1970. These goals were revised June 7 with a new objective of saving $68,450 this year, representing a 13% reduction in the standard cost of controllable waste . With $36,501 saved through July 19, the program is on schedule to make the planned reduction. The program is being carried out by a Waste Reduction Committee headed by John G. Cunningham, Karastan gen eral superintendent, as chairman. The foreman and assistant foremen are sub chairmen for their respective depart ments. In the well-organized program, the 11 worst areas of controllable waste were determined. Each foreman arrived at a waste reduction goal for the type of waste in his department and suggest ed improvements to be made in reach ing the goal. The foremen and assistant foremen talked with the production employees concerned, pointing out the cost of waste and possible means of reducing the amount of waste. Employees were asked for their suggestions as to how to make improvements and these suggestions 'were incorporated in the program. Mr. Cunningham, in commenting on the results achieved in reducing waste, said: “This program could not succeed without the close working together of the employees and supervisors. At the rate we are going, we have about achieved our original and have already set new goals. Most people use the emergency room for what it was intended, a place for handling sudden emergencies. Too often, though, it is used by persons seeking treatment of ailments of a non-emer gency nature. The hospital officials pointed out that such misuse is a continuing problem, with the emergency room being used as a means of seeing. a doctor without having to wait in his office or seeing a doctor after his regular office hours. If patients would use the emergency room only for genuine emergencies, con siderable traffic would be eliminated. The hospital personnel, including the physician on duty, would be able to render emergency services promptly in cases where needed. It costs the patient considerably more to be treated in the emergency room than in a doctor’s office. Emergency room services in non-accident cases generally are not covered by your hos pital-surgical insurance. Therefore, it doesn’t pay to visit the emergency room for colds, flu or other ailments that could be treated the next day in the doctor’s office during regular hours.
