25-Yr. People
Hear Jackson
Dramatic changes in Fieldcrest’s bedspread
operation since 1953 were reviewed by Arthur
L. Jackson, vice president-domestics manu
facturing, at the annual 25-Year Club'meeting
for members in the Bedspread and Bedspread
Finishing Mills.
Speaking at the meeting in the Burton Grove
School auditorium Saturday morning, October
17, Mr. Jackson cited figures showing that em
ployment in the bedspread operation has nearly
doubled with tremendous increases in sales and
in payrolls.
He pointed out that the company has spent
$71/2-million for capital improvements in the
bedspread operation since 1953. Another half
million has been approved for a new addition
to the dyehouse, making a total of $8-million in
capital for expansion and improvements.
Mr. Jackson thanked the long-service em
ployees for their contribution to the success of
the bedspread operation. The company, he said,
would not spend the money it has spent for
improvements without “confidence in you and
in what you are doing.”
J. L. West, plant manager of the Bedspread
Mill, reviewed 1970 at the greige mill and ex
pressed appreciation for the loyalty and service
of the 25-Year Club members. Speaking to those
nearing retirement age, he said, “We don’t
know how or if we can fill your places when
you retire. We want you to know that you and
your efforts are appreciated.”
K. M. Vaughn, general superintendent of the
Bedspread Finishing Mill, reviewed activities
at the Bedspread Finishing Mill and showed
some of the new styles added to the bedspread
lines for the new season. Mr. Vaughn spoke in
place of J. P. Foster, plant manager of the Bed
spread Finishing Mill, who had to be out of
town and could not attend the meeting.
F. E. Barron, division vice president-bed
spread manufacturing, was the master of cere
monies. In brief remarks he commented on the
over-all bedspread operation and told of his
appreciation for the service and faithfulness of
the long-time employees.
E. R. Ellis, an area personnel manager, pre
sented the following new members who be
came eligible for the 25-Year Club this year:
Hazel S. Aaron, Clyde C. Carter, Joseph H.
Eggleston, John W. Pearman and F. Wade
Younts, of the Bedspread Mill; and Helen M.
Thompson, of the Bedspread Finishing MiU.
Entertainment for the meeting was provided
by The Ambassadors Quartet from Martinsville,
Va., and their gospel-singing program was
greatly enjoyed.
In the drawings for attendance prizes con
ducted by Daisy Clark and Franklin Craddock,
bedspreads were awarded to Thomas Jenkins,
S. T. Anderson, Frances Spangler and Beulah
Yarbrough.

slightly below the comparable period
last year,” Mr. Moore said.
“Retail sales, which had been ex
pected to improve in the second half,
continue to be slow in many areas. How
ever, easier Federal monetary and fiscal
policy reinforces our belief that con
sumer spending will improve in the
coming months. We anticipate that the
strength in our sales noted in the third
quarter will continue and that sales and
earnings in the fourth quarter will com
pare favorably with last year.”
