Mayor Singleton Speaks To Golden Age Club
Approximately 135 members of the
Golden Age Club of the Eden YMCA,
many of whom are Fieldcrest retirees,
heard Eden Mayor A. G. Singleton
speak at the club’s April 20 meeting.
A covered dish luncheon, supplied by
club members in honor of the occasion,
was served in the Spray United Meth
odist church fellowship hall.
Mayor Singleton, who was division
vice president and director of engineer
ing at Fieldcrest prior to his retirement,
introduced as a special guest, R. R.
Harris, the new city manager of Eden.
The mayor discussed the progress
made on the water and sewer project
and also noted that the State Water and
Sewer bond issue, if passed on May 6,
should bring $158,000 to Eden.
At the conclusion of his speech Mayor
Singleton signed a resolution proclaim
ing the month of May “Senior Citizens
Month.”
The speaker was introduced by S. T.
Anderson, retired Bedspread Mill plant
manager.
RCC Textile Class To Graduate

Macy, Barry Solomon and Joe Overby.
The Textile Technology and Manage
ment Program prepares the graduate
for opportunities in textiles as a tech
nician or supervisor.
Those already employed in the indus
try can expand and sharpen their skills.
Those desiring employment in textiles
can develop skills needed to gain entry
and to progress in the industry which
employs 60% of the work force in Rock
ingham County and 42% in North Car
olina.
Fieldcrest employees interested in
entering the program should talk to the
RCC registrar or members of the tex
tile staff. Information may also be ob
tained from J. E. Gardner, training
manager at Fieldcrest.
The program was developed jointly
by the college and the textile industry
in Rockingham County. An advisory
committee consisting of representatives
from the various textile companies has
worked with the college administration
and staff on matters of personnel, cur
riculum, enrollments, etc.
The curriculum was recently expand
ed to seven quarters to cover more ade
quately the textile processes and relat
ed subjects. The college now has a staff
of three working on the program. Head
ing the program is Robert Nesbit -with
Don Williams and John Ramsey as
staff members.
In addition to the regular instructors,
there are numerous part-time instruc
tors many of whom are members of
Fieldcrest management.
Donations From Cempanies
Facilities for the program include,
in addition to classrooms, a textile pro
duction lab and a textile testing lab.
Machinery in the production lab and
equipment in the testing lab were large
ly paid for by donations from textile
companies in the county.
The curriculum for the program is
practical and directly applicable in the
textile industry. Manufacturing is em
phasized as well as services related to
production such as industrial engineer
ing, costs, planning and quality control.
Field trips are also scheduled to supple
ment classroom experience.
The human relations element of su
pervision is covered with courses such
as psychology, communications, indus
trial management and supervisory prac
tice.
