DR. R. F. DRAPER, JR. Former Employee Is Doctor Of Medicine Robert Franklin Draper, Jr., has re ceived the Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. Dr. Draper was one of the nation’s top 10 black medical students to re ceive the $8,000. Sloan Foundation Scholarship and $3,000 in other scholar ships. He was appointed as surgical in tern at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. A graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Fieldale, Va., he received the Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University in 1968. Dr. Draper will begin five nnore years of training to become a specialist in Or thopedic Surgery. He is married to the former Virginia Sally of Niagara Falls, N. Y., who is an attorney. She is special-assistant to the chairman of the U. S. Equal Em ployment Opportunity Commission, Washington, D. C. Dr. Draper is the son of Mrs. Savan nah Goins Draper and the late Robert F. Draper, Sr., Rt. 3, Martinsville, Va. Mrs. Savannah Draper is a spooler ten der at the Fieldale Towel Mill. Dr. Draper himself was once employed in the Shipping Department at Fieldale. Buy . . . They also are eligible for low- cost group hospital-surgical-medical in surance designed especially for their needs, supplementing their Medicare payments. Retired employees enjoy discount privileges when purchasing first-line merchandise at the Fieldcrest Stores. Retirees each year upon request are is sued identification cards authorizing the 25% discount. The same card may be used for iden tification when making purchases at the soon-to-be-opened employees out let store in the Draper business section. If any retiree failed to receive his card, he should contact the personnel man ager at the mill where he last worked. Retirees also may enjoy discount privileges when purchasing rugs or car pet at the Karastan Cash Sales Show room in the Amp Building, Eden, by obtaining an authorization form (FCO- 13) signed by the personnel manager at the location where the retiree last worked. Employees who retire are still very much a part of the “Fieldcrest Fam ily”. Bailey Named Shift Foreman At Karastan Richard R. Bailey has been appointed a shift foreman in the Dyeing Depart ment at the Karastan Rug MiU effective June 26. Before joining Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., Mr. Bailey was a supervisor for ap proximately 10 years at the United Piece Dye Works in Bluefield, W. Va. He currently is going through the Kar astan Department Orientation Program. continue their membership in the 25- Year Club and attend the gatherings of the long-service groups. Retirees are permitted on occasion to visit in the mill where they formerly worked. When making such a visit, the retired employee obtains from the Wackenhut guard a Special Visitors Pass (FC-R4) admitting him to the mill on the particular date. At mills where there are no Wacken hut guards, the mill management has established arrangements for admitting retired employees to the mill. Those wishing to visit at such locations should apply at the gate or the mill office. m RANDALL VESTAL Retiree’s Grandson Gets Teaching Assistantship ^ Bruce Randall Vestal of Greensboro, a 1972 chemistry graduate at Lenoir Rhyne College, has received a $2,700 per year teaching assistantship for grad uate study at the University of North Caroiina at Chapel Hill. He will seek his master of science de gree in medicinal chemistry in the UNC School of Pharmacy and his assistant- ship will involve teaching 12-15 hours per week in the laboratory. The graduate student is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Vestal of Charleston, S. C., and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Greeley A. Vestal of 403 Moir Street, Eden. Greeley Vestal is a retired supervisor from the Sheet Finishing Mill. A native of Greensboro, Randail Ves tal is a 1968 graduate of Grimsley High School and is married to the former Marsha Ellen Tysinger of .Salisbury, also a member of the 1972 graduating class at Lenoir Rhyne. Randall Vestal twice has been award ed grants from the North Carolina Academy of Science for undergraduate research into the preparation and syn thesis of certain compounds which have shown promise as tuberculin drugs. 8 THE MILL WHISTLE
