No. 9 Sales, Earnings Rise During Third Quarter Fieldcrest Mills’ sales for the third quarter rose to $62,648,000, up 9% from $57,228,000 in the same 1971 per iod. This rate of increase is comparable with the nine-month sales increase of 8%. Quarterly earnings increased for the third consecutive quarter this year to $2,158,000 ($.60 per share), up 7% from the year earlier level of $2,009,000 ($.56 per share). The operating results were announc ed October 23 by William C. Battle, president and chief executive officer of Fieldcrest Mills Inc. Mr. Battle said rug and carpet sales continued the first half trend of sub stantial sales increases relative to 1971. In addition, sales increased for the Fieldcrest and North Carolina Finish ing divisions. “Inventories at the retail level dur ing the third quarter continued to be rigidly controlled, reflecting the na tional statistics which indicate moder ate growth in business inventories. “Our unfilled order position and the attitude of our retail customers point to a strong Christmas selling season and improved fourth quarter ship ments,” Mr. Battle said. Mount Holly Employees Set Record Of Giving For the eighth consecutive year, 100% of the employees of the Mount Holly Spinning Mill at Mount Holly have con tributed to the Gaston County United Appeal. The record is more outstanding when it is considered that in all of the years but two, 100% have partici pated on the Fair Share basis. In this year’s campaign, the employ ees contributed a total of $1,867.81 and the company through the Fieldcrest Foundation gave $450, making a total of $2,317.81 from the employees and the Company. In the two years that the mill did not have 100% Fair Share participa tion, all employees except one pledged a Fair Share and that one person pledged an amount just under the Fair Share figure.
