Salvation Army Award Honors Battle
William C. Battle, president of Field-
crest Mills, Inc., has been awarded the
honor of Life Member on the Salva
tion Army Board of the National Cap
ital and Virginias District. He is a for-
hier chairman of the Salvation Army
Virginia State Advisory Board.
The citation on the Certificate of Life
Membership points out that Mr. Battle
"has shown continuing interest in and
devotion to the cause which this or
ganization serves, and as a member of
the Advisory Board, has demjonstrated
hy outstanding service a concern for
the welfare of humanity ...”
The certificate, signed by W. E. Cham
berlain, territorial commander of the
Salvation Army in the Southern Ter
ritory, was presented in an informal
Ceremony at the Fieldcrest Lodge, Field-
ale, Va.
Making the presentation was G. Frank
Clement, of Roanoke, Va., chairman of
the board of the Shenandoah Life In
surance Company. Mr. Clement suc
ceeded Mr. Battle as chairman of the
Salvation Army Virginia State Board
when Mr. Battle became president of
Fieldcrest Mills, Inc.
Also presented to Mr. Battle was a
Citation of Merit from the Salvation
Army Virginia State Board in memory
of Mr. Battle’s father, the late Gov. John
S. Battle.
The late Virginia governor was cited
for “ . . . his ready assistance to the
Salvation Army and its personnel, or
ganizations and varied programs; and
his deep interest in people and their
moral, physical and spiritual well-be
ing .. . ”
“Genuine Concern”
The citation closes with:
“The Salvation Army salutes Gov
ernor John S. Battle for demonstrating
in the best Salvation Army traditions
that every child of God matters and for
exemplifying genuine concern and in
terest in others, to the point of action.”
The certificate was signed by John
D. Needham, divisional commander, and
G. Frank Clement, immediate past
chairman of the Virginia State Advis
ory Board.
50-Year Employees
Honored By Company
Allie M. Houchins and Glenn H. Simp
son, new 50-year employees, were hon
ored by the management of Fieldcrest
Mills, Inc., at a luncheon for the 50-
Year Club Thursday, June 14, at the
Meadow Greens Country Club.
Each of the veteran employees was
presented the Fieldcrest diamond-and-
gold 50-year emblem, a gift and other
remembrances by William C. Battle,
president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc.
In making the presentations, Mr.
Battle said, “These awards and meet
ings can in no way adequately express
the appreciation the Company has for
people like yourselves.
“Performance And Quality”
“You are the people who over the
years have set the tone of performance
and quality that has made Fieldcrest
Mills what it is. And Fieldcrest is the
best. The Company must count on peo
ple to perform and measure up to the
high standards the 50-year employees
have set.”
Mr. Battle noted that it was the first
50-year meeting he had been able to
attend. He expressed his regret at hav
ing had to miss the past meetings and

Deadline Nears
Applications for educational grants-
in-aid from the Fieldcrest Foundation
must be received by July 15 to be con
sidered for the fall semester.
It was necessary to set a cut-off date
six weeks prior to the time the grant is
to be used in order to allow the grant
committee time to effectively evalu
ate the requests.
Applications for the grants should be
submitted to the office of Dr. William
McGehee, General Offices building,

The educational grants program, start
ed in April, 1972, recognizes that many
individuals may more profitably attend
technical institutes or take trade courses
rather than attend a four-year college
or university.
Therefore, it is designed to aid em
ployees’ children who wish to attend
