Dickerson Facing
Burlington Champ

At Mill Whistle press time
on Thursday, the results of
the doff-off between
Fieldcrest’s Phillip
Dickerson and Burlington’s
Monnie Wilkie were still not
known.
The final winner will not
be determined until Sep
tember 13 when Mr. Wilkie
comes to Eden to compete
against Mr. Dickerson on
his home grounds at the
Bedspread Mill.
Fieldcrest’s “Superdoffer,”
Phillip Dickerson of the Bed
spread Mill, went back into
action September 6 as he faced
Monnie Wilkie, the Burlington
Industries champion, in Mr.
Dickerson’s first participation in
the elimination contests.
Mr. Dickerson traveled to
Burlington’s Caroleen Plant at
Caroleen, N.C. (near Shelby)
Thursday, September 6, to
compete against Mr. Wilkie in
the “away-from-home” part of
the (competition. On September
13, Mr. Wilkie will come to Eden
to compete against Mr.
Dickerson on the latter’s home
ground at the Bedspread Mill.
The national rules require
each contest to be a home-and-
away series with the total time
for six frames determining the
winner in this race-against-the-
clock tournament.
Making the trip to Caroleen
with Mr. Dickerson were Cleo
Smith, training coordinator at
the Bedspread Mill; Wayne
French of the Draper Industrial
Engineering Department, who
was the official timer; and Otis
Marlowe, editor of The Mill
Whistle, who handled ar
rangements for the “Super
doffer” competition at Field-
crest.
Fieldcrest drew a bye in the
first round of the eliminations
and Mr. Dickerson did not have
to compete. Meanwhile, Mr.
Wilkie defeated Richard White
of Spartan Mills in Spartanburg,
S. C. in the first round.
The winner of the Fieldcrest-
Burlington competition will
meet Earl Pearson, the
champion of Highland Cotton
Mills in High Point. Mr. Pearson
previously won over Roland
Chesney of Textiles, Inc., in
Gastonia.
Mr. Dickerson became
Fieldcrest’s “Superdoffer” by
defeating Rudolph Dalton of the
Blanket Greige Mill. Mr. Dalton

Technical Center Work
Progressing On Schedule
Construction of the new
Fieldcrest Technical Center,
which was begun the last week in
May, is progressing according to
schedule.
Concrete has been poured for
the lower level up to the first
floor level, and 98 percent of the
lower level columns have been
constructed of concrete with
reinforced steel inside.
The plumbing has been
roughed in for the lower level
and all drain lines, sewer lines
and water mains have been run.
The parking lot has been curbed,
guttered, stoned and seal coated.
Subcontractors are expected
to begin pouring concrete for the
upper level floor today (Mon
day).
The building is expected to be
completed by the end of April,
1974.
The new technical facility,
estimated to cost about one-and-
a half million dollars, is being
constructed on a 12-acre tract on
the corner of Pierce Street and
Stadium Drive, adjacent to the

Mizell Will Head
Eden UF Campaign

Howard W. Mizell has been
named general chairman of the
Eden United Fund campaign to
be conducted later this fall on
behalf of the 11 health, welfare,
recreational and character
building youth services sup
ported by the fund.
Robert L. Moore, director of
employee relations at Fieldcrest
who is president of the Eden
United Fund, announced the
appointment of the campaign
chairman. Mr. Moore said the
dates for the campaign and the
financial goal will be announced
soon following a meeting of the
budget and admissions com
mittee.
In commenting on the ap
pointment of the campaign
chairman, Mr. Moore said:
“We feel fortunate in ob
taining a man of Mr. Mizell’s
abilities for this key position. He
is well known in the business
community, has plenty of
initiative and is a good
organizer. I am confident he will
do a fine job.
