Under the arrangement in effect this week, employees may sign up for the purchase of Savings Bonds right in their own departments by contacting the immediate supervisor. Haven H. Newton, vice president of industrial relations who is chairman of the campaign, said, “We would like to substantially raise our percentage of participation in the Savings Bonds program, made especially convenient by the Payroll Savings Plan. “The Bicentennial year is an appropriate time to increase our participation. This program is important to our country and I hope that many non-participants will join their fellow employees and the millions of other Americans who already are buying U.S. Savings Bonds. It’s an investment in your — and America’s — continued inde pendence,” Mr. Newton said. The Payroll Savings Plan offers employees an opportunity to participate in a safe,easy way to build a savings program. The steady accumulation of savings set aside in this automatic manner helps make it possible to realize many objectives — a college education for your chil dren, payment on a home, extra retirement income, etc. Series E Bonds can be purchased in denominations of $25, $50, $75 or $100 at a cost of $18.75, $37.50, $56.25 and $75 respectively. 'Their interest rate is 6 percent compounded semiannually when held to maturity of five years. Through the Payroll Savings Plan, a specified amount can be withheld from a check each pay period and applied toward the purchase of bonds. As soon as enough has been withheld to purchase a bond, the bond-will be automatically mailed to you.
