Happenings... Editor Wins Quiil Award RODNEY SMITH The son of two Fieldale employees is the first Virginian to win the national award given by the Inter national Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors. Rodney Smith, editor of the Gretna Gazette, is the recipient of the 17th Annual Golden Quill Award which is presented for excellence in editorial writing in a non-daily newspaper. His father, John A. Smith, is a dye machine tender and his mother, Evelyn, is a clerk in the Slashing and Yam Preparation Department. 4-H'er Is Tops In N.C. District DANA RARER Dana Raper and her two hand puppets have won in both county and district 4-H competition. She will now go the the state competition to be held in Raleigh. Dana, who just recently moved to Eden when her father, Dan Raper, was transferred from the Whiteville Plant to Mechanical Development, still represents Columbus County in the competition. One of the puppets is a 4-H student asking questions about the American Business System. The other puppet is a law professor who answers the questions. The entire dialogue was written by Dana. Self Earns Air Medal Captain John W. Self of the U.S. Air Force has been awarded the I Medai (First Oak Leaf Cluster) for his performance whiie participating sustained aerial flight as a pilot over Europe and surrounding areas, Novel ber 1975-October 1976. The citation accompanying the award said Self flew critical missions national significance in the face of hazardous land and weather conditio'’ Despite great personal risk and knowing the dangers involved, he perfo" ed with outstanding skill and precision. LESLIE HOWAP’ Alexander Sheeting Mill Employees’ Children Get Athletic Awards Children of six employees at the Alexander Sheeting Mill have been recognized for outstanding athletic ability in various high school sports. Tim Moore, son of Ernest Moore who is Weave Room section foreman, was named Best Practice Player in boys’ varsity basketball at East High School. Phillip Luckadoo received Most Valuable Player award in freshman baseball at Chase High School. His father, Charles Luckadoo works in the Shop. Player and Most Runs Batted In awards in varsity baseball at East High School. Ricky Smith, son of Stanley Smith who is general foreman of Plant Service, received Most Valuable Frank Hutchins was named Most Valuable Player in baseball at Chase High School. His mother and father, Marion and Franklin Hutchins, are both employees in the Weave Room. Scott and Leslie Howard, stuoj at East High School, are the chil® of George Howard, perso’j manager.
