FOUNDERS' DAY TO BE CELEBRATED TtlANKSGIVING BY STUDENTS AND ALUMNAE
The 24th of November has been
set aside this year in Montreat
College for a special Pounders'
Day Celebration. This arrange
ment is to make it possible for
all alumnae to come and help us
honor the founders of our college.
In 1913 the Mountain Retreat
Association authorized the Presi
dent, Rev. R.C.Anderson,to offer
the use of the Kontreat grounds
and buildings to the General As
sembly of the Presbyterian Church
to be used during the v/inter sea
son for school purposes. In May,
1914, the General Assembly, meet
ing in Kansas City, Mo., accepted
this offer,and referred the school
to its several component synods,
appointing Trustees who were to
open the school. These Trustees
convened on May 2, 1916 at the
home of Rev, R.C.Anderson in Mon
treat for their first meeting. In
October 1916, the school opened
its first session with eight
pupils six, of them boarders, in
the old Montreat Hotel, which has
now been replaced by the Assembly
Inn. In January 1924, the build
ing burned, so that Sylvan HeirhtS'
and Andelk Lodge had to be used.
The following fall the Alba Hotel
was taken as a dormitory, and
classes were held in the Anderson
Auditorium. Beautii'ul Gaither Hall
was given to the college,in 1935
for an administration building by
Mrs. R.C. Anderson. At present
there are three dormitories: the
Alba Hotel,the Fellowship Hall,
and Lookout Lodge.
This year, as has been said,
above, tlie college v;ill combine
the celebration of Thanksgiving
Day and Pounders' Day, and we
cordially \,irge all alumnae to
return at this time.
FACULTY PLAY
Everyone who missed it should be
weeping! Montreat really "turned
out" for a play presented by the
teachers of Montreat College on
October 0, 1938. It was rumored
that curiosity was the magnet
which drew the crowd, and was it
appeased!
The star players of the evening,
Misses Cooper, C.M.McSlroy,R.Mc-
Elr oy, Watkins, Hoyt, Ilenderlite, Wade,
and Mrs. Morton, were featured in
a one-act play Ull too short for
such talent), entitled ALICE BLUE
GOWN. ....
Preceeding the main feature, ,
"Montreat's Most Popular Melody"
was rendered by two famous musicians
the Misses Webb and Lord. Maestro
Woodhouse and her Swing Sisters
gave a new (?) version of some
nursery rhymes.
