SPORTSMANSHIP
VJhat is sportsmanship? Is it
just a pretty little word that
sounds very nice when certain
people talk about it in chapel?
Or has it a real meaning behind
it - something that makes others
look up to you, something that
makes a person help you out of
a bad spot, not because it is
going to get thera anywhere, but
just because they are "big"
enough?
Good sportsmanship does have a
meaning, but it is more than
that. It is a feeling of con
sideration for the other fellow
because he is a human being, it
is respect for older people no
matter what faults they may or
may not have. It is loyalty to
the team and to the school you
belong to, not because they are
perfect, but because you belong
to them, they are made up of you,
and are what you (not the next
man) make them.
In ages past the Greek youths
were taught to bear any kind of
hardship unwaveringly, without
a sound, and never letting o soul
is no sense in carrying things
too far, which' is only right.
But, after all, didn't they
have the right idea, barring
extremes? Shouldn't we stand
up firiiily and take our part
when it is necessary, or, step
ping back, make place for another,
v;hen occasion arises? Haven't
you at one time or another been
unendingly grateful to a girl
v;ho has given up her place to
give you a chance when she was
really enjoying her part in the
garae, or felt a debt of grati
tude to one who has overlooked
jour mistake in order to save
you from embarrassment? Yes,
we all love her. She is a good
sport, ready to take part in a
gMie or plan, but also ready to
give up to another v/hen that is
right.
