MAY, 194G LAST CLASS GRADUATES FROM MONTREAT JUNIOR COLLEGE Sophomore College Presents “Pride” And Prejedice” It won’t be long now before flontreat girls will be singing “Children of the King” for the last time this year. But first, there'is an important event. The Senior play. Pride and Prejudice, adapted by Helen .Terome, will be presented May ' 13. Sophomores can be seen any day standing in the lunch line with those little tan books. The play concentrates on Mrs- Bennett’s determination to get her daughters married. Jane, Eliza beth, and Lydia are likely-look ing girls in an unlikely looking period when a woman’s one possi ble career is matrimony. To be a wife wa.s success. Anything else was failure. Jane and her Mr. Bingley, and Lydia and her Mr. Wickham are quite content with things as they are; but not Elizabeth! She act ually refuses , to marry Mr. Col lins, whom she openly deplores, or Mr. Darcy, whom she secretly adores. The play is the story of the duel between Elizabeth and her pride and Darcy and his prejudice. Each gives in before the evening is over, and pride and prejudice meet halfway. BOGGS ANNUAL MAY DAY EXERCISES TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY, MAY 18TH girls have been chosen to repre sent their respective classes in the May Day, one of the highlights of the school year in Montreat, is to be held in Central Park on May 19th. Throughout the pro gram, there will be many dances and songs, including traditional May Pole Dance. The old-time square dance is also a favorite. Beverly Creasman, the striking brunette from Asheville, will reign as Queen. Wanda Pierce, blonde high school senior, will be m.aid-of-honor. The following Court: Lily Starling, freshman high school; Carroll LeGette, sophomore high school; Annette Polmar, junior high school; and Judy Briggs, senior high school class. Mary Katherine Wood and Nancy McAllister will represent the frc.shman college class, Ida Owens, the sophomore college class, and Sue Burney, the junior college class. “ONE DELERIOUS NIGHT” PRESENTED BY MONTREAT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS “One Delerious Night,” a three act play, was presented by the Senior High School Cla.ss on Sat urday night, April 4. Mrs. Arnold wishes to present to her granddaughter, Pat, the beautiful Queen Elizabeth emer ald necklace at her engagement dinner to Dick Delary, whom Pat despises. Pat has called in Paul Hammond, a handsome young man, whom she thinks she’s in love with, to act as butler- She and Dick try to scare each other out of marrying, Pat with the aid of friend Sally, and Dick with the aid of friend Freddie. Boggs To Speak o Approximately fifty-five stu dents, who will be the last class to graduate from Montreat Junior College before it becomes a four- year college, will receive diplomas at commencement exercises on May 20. Major Allan Cabaniss of Colum bia, Mississippi, will deliver the commencement address on Mon day morning at ten o’clock. At this time various awards will be made- Dr. Wade H. Boggs, e.xecutive secretary of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief of the Gen eral Assembly of the Presbyter ian Church, will speak on Sunday morning. May 19. The College Choir, under the di rection of Miss Woodhouse and ac companied by Miss Lord, will sing at both of these programs. Dr. A. C. Anderson, president, of the college, will deliver his an nual address to the Young People of the Church on Sunday night at 8 p.m. The annual music concert will be Saturday night at eight o’clock. Faculty Selects Marshals For Commencement The faculty of Montreat Col lege has selected the following girls to serve as Marshals dur ing the graduation season this year: from the junior high school class, Jane Holt and Nancy Alli son; from the freshman college class, Virginia Wood and Virginia Thompson; from the junior col lege class, Azielec Kepley and Mildred Bailey. This is the only honor conferred on any students throughout the year by the faculty alone. The girls are chosen on their qualifi cations of character, scholarship, dignity, and ability to march well. The girls lead the classes into the auditorium and act as ushers during commencement exercises.
