February, 1947 THE D I A L E T T E Page 3 Nation Rivets Attention On Winter Sport As this article goes to press, the fifth winter Olympic Games contests being held in Switzer land arc holding the keen interest of the many countries who have participants in the games. There was a lapse of twelve years be tween the fourth and fifth w'inter games, because of the war. An American wom.an plum meted down the snow course in tlie skiiing event against Europe’s masters, coming in second place. In Ancient Greece the Olympic games was a general name for one of their national festivals. The origin of the games reaches back into a remote antiquity, and was attributed by the Greeks in various traditions to a divine source. Only Greeks of pure des cent were allowed to participate in the games until the conquest of Greece by the Romans, when they also were admitted to the games. The ancient Olympic games died out during the fourth century, A. D., and were not re vived until 1896, when the first of a new series, the “Modern Olympic Games” was played in Athens. These games have been suspended only during the world wars. Honor and shame from no condition rise; act well your part, there all the honour lies.— Pope x’S Beauty Shop Cherry Street Black Mountain. Phone 4301 High School Board Urges Tribe Spirit It isn’t too late to get in the “basketball swing.” Those who know from experience say there’s nothing to compare to the fun found in a good, fast game of basketball. Remember, the more there are playing, the better chance your tribe will have of winning the basketball tourna ment and the cup. So let’s all go out for basketball 100 per cent. Girls, hiking is still going on, so let’s all go on hikes and get points toward that “M”. Every hike counts, so come on, every one. Then there is still Indoor Sports, which includes checkers, darts, badminton, etc. So come on down. Five points an hour! College Tribe Eniovs Outing A party was given on Saturday, February 7, in the Rec Hall by the Cherokee Tribe. The main event of the evening was the skating (and the wonderful mu sic!). Later folk games were play ed, and then refreshments of hot chocolate and cookies were en joyed by all. Everyone had a very nice time. Belated Initiation Is Held By College Board On January 31, the Board members p;ot together for an evening of fun. The members who had not been initiated were carried through the shocking or deal, shrieking and screaming all the while. Games were played, refreshments served, and then the evening was topped off by sled riding on the hill. COMPLIMENTS OF MONTREAT STORE Staff Moves Into New Workroom And Office Recently a new member has been added to the Staff of Stu dent Publications. This new mem ber belongs to a general group often written with one of a num ber of adjectives, some of which are bed, living, laundry, class, bath, or dining. Our particular one we proudly label Staff “Room”. The Staff Room is lo cated on the first floor of the In firmary. Although new to this business of editing a newspaper and annual, she has already been a partner in some early morning and late evening labor. And if there should be one among you who docs not believe there is work in this business, just try it for yourself sometime. If you were to nose into the Staff Room today, it is probable that your eyes would meet a strange conglommeration of pap ers, pencils, notebooks, and pic tures scattered over the room. However, it will not be for long. Better things are yet to come. A cabinet is already installed for filing, for keeping all the equip ment, and for storing old issues of the Dialetie and Sun Dial. The room furnishes a fine place for the Staff to work. There is a big dream for its future with con fidence that it will see many good issues of the Dialelte and editions of the Sun Dial in all the years ahead.
