Page 4 HIGH SCHOOL CHANGES (Continued Prom Page 1) we are heading toward a grand meal. Aren’t these large rooms nice, girls? Practically all of us are on the third floor of Assembly Inn, with the exception of one hall on second floor. We’re really having a swell time! Why, do you know that if we have finished all our assign ments, we can take a bath during study hall! Providing we are very quiet, of course. There is something else that’s new with the High School this year—We have Miss Ellis as our housemother, and she just fits right in with the rest of us. The girls on second floor have to be pretty careful because there are guests down the hall. One might liear Miss Ellis reminding the girls to remember always to wear housecoats in the hall, lest they be caught in an embarrassing sit uation. Man! This is the life! We have a little sun parlor on second floor where we may have dates. Very often you find it oc cupied too! We also have morn ing watch and various other meetings in the sun parlor. It’s really nice! Let me tell you something that the High School can do this year that is a very special privilege. If we are good “lil” girls, we may go into Black Mountain in groups unchaperoned. So far, we have really had co-operation and we are truly enjoying this privilege. Our new High School girls, as well as the old ones, are so enthu siastic this year! Almost every one is going out for all the activi ties provided for them, and we’re getting along swell in our dormi tory life! We love our new abid ing place and the High School is really going to land on top this year. If you don’t believe it, just watch us! Virginia Buckner President of High School Student Body THE DIALETTE What Makes A MONTREATER ? ? ? I hope that all of you girls by now really feel like “Old Mon- treaters” and feel that you are in deed an important part of the Student Body. And I hope you’ve caught some thing of the spirit of Montreat. You know what I mean? I mean something of the spirit of love, of truth, of friendliness, and of all those things which make Mon treat the most beautiful place in the world. And you know, when we think of what makes us really love Montreat so very much, we soon realize that it isn’t the build ings or the mountains—they help, of course—but that it is individ uals — individuals among the teachers, among the students and people in Montreat — individuals who have faith in us and individ uals who have ideals and dreams hooked to distant stars and yet who see the realities of life. Our friends among the girls make us feel that we have the most won derful girls here in the world for they are girls who are friend ly and thoughtful and ready to help in every way possible. These beauties of Montreat are ours—sure—^and yet we in turn owe much to Montreat. We want always to give our best in what ever we are doing. Christ only asks our best—^nothing more or nothing less. And we can give back" our best to the world in service when we have fallen down on our knees and asked God for wisdom and guidance. You know, it’s the little things that really tell what kind of a person we are. And if we are faithful in the little tasks and truly give our best, we shall be asked to do larger and greater things. Our Master never shunned the small and insignificant tasks of life, nor did he leave undone the large ones. And too, we want to be a real Montreat girl—clean in thought. And you know, the Montreat “spirit” is not something that we can have one day and not have the next; but it is something that permeates our whole life—giving our hearts the spirit of love and truth and high ideals that exist here. A true Montreat girl is kind, thoughtful, considerate, honest, and has many more characteristics. These traits don’t just come to us; we must work constantly to develop the kind of personality that makes us an ideal Montreater and an ideal Christian girl anywhere we are. In being a real Montreater we want to be a true friend to every one—and Emerson tells us that “the only way to have a friend is to be one.” And last let’s be true to our selves. You know, we can fool other people and yet we can’t fool ourselves. And in the long run, I don’t really believe that we fool other people either, do you? I hope that each of you will have the grandest year ever here at Montreat and that it will be one long remembered for its fun, its fellowship, and its service. Gladys Goodman President of Christian Youth Fellowship Goin’ or Cornin’ Saturday, September 20, the High School had a rip-roaring time at a party sponsored by the Athletic Board and held in the Rec. Hall. Jeepers, was I seeing things or was everyone actually dressed backwards? They went in the back door backwards, saying Goodbye when they first arrived. As a matter of fact, they did ev erything but talk backwards. The originality with which everybody was dressed was really hysterical. 'I’here was a judged contest to see who was dressed in the best back ward costume. They had games and refreshments, too. The main excitement was created by the two he-men who were friends of Sue Ledbetter and Lenard Ham. They surely were part of the big attraction for the evening. After refreshments, everybody went home saying “Hello”! It sounds crazy to me! October, 1947 Tribes Compete In Annual Talent Show The unusual arrangement of talent night went over with a banging sucess Saturday, Septem ber 20. It was the first of its kind and believed by many the best in years. Yes, Montreat is proud to have so much fine talent within her midst. The girls who had a chance to perform were grand and we are sure that there is still plenty of talent among those who did not get to the spotlight. On the program we had some of the great entertainers of Mon- treat. If you were one of the un fortunate who didn’t get to attend the great event, you have missed, “half your life.” There were such sensations as the great tribal in strument players, the master mu sicians and singers, the boogie champs, rib-tickling readings, im itations from the farm, skits from all walks of life, and the sensa tional songs from the hills. See what you missed? There were also yells and songs from the dif ferent tribes which showed the friendly spirit of the girls. Competition was keen and each tribe visioned itself the winner, but the judges retained their de cisions for two whole weeks until the big campfire last Saturday night. It was more exciting that way, wasn’t it? J. L. PELLOM FINE WATCH REPAIRING AH Work Guaranteed ★ BLACK MOUNTAIN Alumnae Notes - . • (Continued on Page 6) Perhaps the most interesting news to most of us would be to hear what the members of the first senior class to graduate from Montreat are doing now. It was a surprise for most of us, but a nice surprise, to find that two of the class had returned as instructors on the college facul ty this year. They are Sue Bur ney, Physical Education Instruc tor, and Dot Jean Sandefer, who is in the Music Department.
