December, 1947 THE DIALBTTE Page 3 • ATHLETICS Hiwasses Triumph In College Tournament With many shrieks and yells from the side lines and tribe spirit beaming forth 'from every one’s face, the soccer tournament ended in a buzz of excitement. Yes, from the very first game all the tribes fought hard to win, never giving up nor showing lack of good sportsmanship. It was impossible to tell which tribe would win until the very last game. Congratulations to the Hi- wassee tribe! The Varsity and “M” Club game on Thanksgiving Day was also a very exciting game. Both of the teams had grand players, but neither team scored. Now that cold weather is here (Brrr!!), indoor sports are much more appealing. These games will be in Anderson Chapel for a while, but plans are being made to use the lower part of the cafe teria for this purpose as soon as it can be heated. Basketball will be the main sport after Christmas, so they are now having beginners’ classes for those who have never played be fore. If you don’t know how to play just go down to these classes. The game is easy to learn and loads of fun! Speaking of basketball, I hear that our gym is going to be heated this winter, so we will have a nice, warm place to play in this year. Sounds great, doesn’t it? The gym has also undergone quite a few other changes since last year. BASKETBALL BEGINS AFTER APACHES TAKE SOCCER HONORS Old man winter has settled in Montreat for the year and soccer has been placed on the shelf until another glorious season rolls around. The Apaches walked off with first place honors in the tournament with the Blackfeet right on their heels. The Chick- asaws and Sequoias tied for third place and the Shawnees, even with all their fine playing, were the last in line. The climax of the season was at Thanksgiving when the Var sity team met the “M” Club and defeated them for the first time in four years. Another exciting moment came when the Junior and Senior teams fought it out in a thrilling night game. The same night the Board, “M” Club, and Miss Mc- Elroy gave a party and initiated all the new Board and “M” Club members. The moans and screams you heard should have been evi dence enough of how the party turned out. Basketball lessons are being given for all girls that have never played before. If you’re among this group, be sure to go down and practice because the points your tribe makes in basketball go a long way towards the “M” and the much cherished athletic cup. Martha Guy Chosen “ Miss Polly Posture” I was shocked when I beheld just in front of me a creature, for surely it was alive, whose chin was resting on its chest, shoulders were rounded, and each of its feet was walking toward each other. This amused me greatly, and I laughed and laughed until I realized with horrified amaze ment that this, this creature was ME!! Have you looked at your self in a mirror lately??? Because of all these stoops and sway backs around the campus, the High School Athletic Board sponsored a posture campaig:n last week Everyone was observed during that week, and the girl showing the most improvement and hav ing the best posture was named “Miss Polly Posture.” This title went to Martha Guy. Mrs. W. H. Armistead v/a.s also selected as having the best posture from the faculty. Congratulations to both of them. Now that we are all go ing home in a day or two for Christmas, let’s be posture con scious. The way we sit, stand, lie, walk, hold ourselves can make us healthy'and happy (if we do them right). A “Polly Posture” is pop ular! A “Droop” is a drip! “Let It Snow”— The Athletic Board is planning a party for some night in the near future; however, there is one con dition connected with it. The ground must be covered with snow. The Board members are eagerly awaiting the time when they will get together for a gay ole’ time sled riding and enjoy ing lucious food on a lovely moonlight night.
