March, 1948 THE DIALETTE Page 3 The Etiquette Of Sports There are certain rules for the playing of every game. But, a- part from the technique of each sport, the etiquette—or the basic principles of good sportsmanship —are the same. No favoritism can be displayed in any sport. The game is based on impersonal fairness to every one, or it is not sport. If you are not able to take sports with grace and good temp er, don’t go in for them. Cursing out your faults, complaining, pro testing, or excusing won’t get anywhere—except “in wrong.” The first rule of sportmanship is never to display ill humor. To always give your opponent the benefit of the doubt is the second rule. Although it may cost you a particular game, nothing is more important to your standing as sportsman. Avoid the show-off practice of understating ability, so that if you should play brilliantly it would create admiring surprise. A player should declare him self unskilled only when he real ly is and would be an annoyance in a game. In acquiring sportsmanship, keep your mind on the game, not on your feelings. If you win, j don’t feel above everybody else.' When you lose, don’t complain, j Get up and good-naturedly and ; courageously prepare for the next encounter. The tribe teams were posted Thursday, March 4, much to the delight of everyone. Congratula tions to those who made the team! You certainly are doing some grand playing. The tournament games are really exciting. If you don’t believe it, come down and see for yourselves. Come on down anyway and cheer your tribe to victory. The Montreat High School team met the Black Mountain High School Girls in the latters’ gym, February 16, and were defeated 35-30. Each team played a clean, exciting game. Then on February 23, the home team was defeated 34-27 by the Black Mountain Or phanage at the Orphanage. The home team played Sw'an- nanoa Girls’ team March 1, and brought home a victory of 31-14. The game was off to a good start from the second it began. When the ball was thrown in to the Swannanoa girls, our guards took it, passed it over center line to the forwards for the first goal of ihe game. Upon orders from Miss Burney the guards played “zone”. The forwards of the opposition could not break the “zone” and therefore could not make many goals. The basketball tournament, which began March 9, is in full swing now, and the games are very exciting. Every tribe has a wonderful team and it is impos sible to guess who will come out as the winner. Now that we are again having competition between the tribes, the tribe spirit has soared, and everyone seems to be beaming with pride and joy for their tribe —and with a good reason, too, for every tribe is making a re- J, L. EASTER—IN YOUR HEART (Continued from page 2) over, but we do not have peace on earth today. Fear, distrust, hate, and strife are found among many peoples of the world. Jesus was called the Prince of Peace, and He is not dead, but living today, waiting to be received into the hearts of men. Not only will He give peace to the individual, but His way of living will make for world peace. Then let us ask Christ to cleanse our sinful hearts so that victory and joy, love and peace, faith and hope can come in and renew our lives. “Like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” (Rom. 6:4) Then, when our lives have been changed, will we have received the true message of Easter in our hearts. ’Tis in your heart, beloved, that the Easter morning breaks. Your slumbering consciousness of Love with thrilling joy awakes; Your thought goes out a minister of good to heal and bless The suffering and desolate who need your tenderness. ’Tis in your heart, beloved, that the Easter lilies bloom. The sweet flowers of affection whose incense cheers the gloom; Go forth and spill their fragrance, whatever wind may blow. The lilites of Ascension thro’ all the years must grow. ’Tis from your heart, beloved, that the stone is rolled away. The Life for all men given pulses in your life today; The banners of Love’s marching hosts are to the breeze unfurled. And the dawn-light of the Kingdom is streaming down the world. Ring out the bells, beloved, the joyous Easter bell. Celestial harmony along their cadence rolls and swells. The blessed Christ is risen in the hearts that throb and thrill Responsive to Love’s law wherein we may all laws fulfill.—Annie L.
