Page 4 THE DIALETT E April 1^48 Basketball Over; Volleyball Begins The basketball tournament, which ended just before long week-end, proved to be as excit ing—if not more so—-than the soccer tournament last fall. All the tribes fought until the very last games to win. The Hiwassee “A” team won first place, being undefeated in every game. The Navajos and Choctaws played a tie off for second place, the Nav ajos winning. In the “B” team tournament the Hiwassees and Navajos had to play a tie off for first place. The Navajos won the victory, leaving the Hiwassees in second place. And so, after these exciting games which were enjoy ed by many enthusiastic girls, the basketball season is over for this year. Several bruised wrists and knuckles being exhibited around the campus lately make it quite evident that we are really in the swing of volleyball now. The game is a very interesting one and al though there are quite a few girls who had never tried their skill at it before, everyone seems to be enjoying it very much. Beautiful spring days are here again, and the weather is just right for tennis. So if you have not already brought out that long unused racket—now is the hour. All you tennis lovers will agree that there is nothing more fun than an exciting game of tennis before breakfast, or some other time during the day. New Board Members Learn “To Take It” The GRILL We Specialize in— WESTERN STEAKS—CHOPS FRIED CHICKEN—OYSTERS We Serve the Best Coffee in Town Have you seen some girls (I guess that is what you call them) strolling merrily around here in queer dress? Their hats are odd looking and their skirts are tight at the bottom instead of the top. But amazing as it seems they haven’t come from some foreign country. They are just being initiated into the High School Athletic Board. One afternoon you may have seen these girls wandering around dressed in skirts and sweaters in side out, high heels with socks, and a pretty Easter Bonnet. On another occasion, they were wear ing silk blouses, hats, saddles without socks, and carrying an egg. Why they were the funniest looking creatures! They had a big wad of bubble gum stuck to the end of their noses, and their jaws were sagging after eating so many crackers. Of course, there was the traditional oyster swallowing too. After seeing what good sports they are we’re glad to have the following girls on our new Ath letic Board for the next year: President, Lilly Starling; Vice President, Bradie Cox; Secretary, Anne Winburn; Treasurer, Char lotte Hisle; Assistant Vice Presi dent, Dutchess Wenk; Cheerlead er, Mary Belle Combs; Co-Hikers, Dorothy Dabbs and Dixie Nell Southard; Tennis, Llzabeth Wil son; Soccer. Engages In Thrilling Games The basketball game of the sea son was College “M” Club vs. High School “M” Club. The game was nip and tuck from the begin ning to the end, and at the end of the game the score was tied 17- 17. The captains voted to play three minutes more to try and break the tie. The tie was broken by a field goal made by Mattie Lee Ladd; the final score was High School 19; College 17. Montreat High met Warren Wil son on March 15 at the latter’s gym. The home team was defeated by a loss of 40-18. Both teams played an excellent game. On March 22, Warren Wilson met our team on their home court. This was a very close game. The final score was 25-21 in favor of Mon treat. Basketball is over among the tribes. The Chickasaws took first place by winning all four games, but the Apaches were a close second with three games won. Then came the Blackfoot tribe, winning two games; Sequoia next, and Shawnees, last. Volleyball has now begun, and tribe enthusiasm is running high. There will be twenty-two players on each team so everyone has an equal chance to make it and get 100 points toward her “M”. Even though some of you won’t make the team, you’ll still get 25 points. Have you noticed what beautiful weather we’re having? It certain ly is wonderful for hikes, and hik ing is another way to add up points.
