May, 1949 THE DIALETTE Page 3 Bride and Brides-Elect Entertained By Faculty On Wednesday evening, May 4, Misses Hoyt, Miles, Smith, and Webb entertained the Faculty at a shower in honor of Mrs. Fran cis Wyly, a recent bride, and Misses Haney and Hillman, brides- eleet. The Adams Music Building was tastefully decorated with spring flowers. The guests participated in a contest which was a brief romance narrated by filling in blanks with the names of flowers. The hon- orees then drew numbers, and sev eral gifts were distributed. The rest of the gifts were placed in baskets, and the honorees drew from them in turn. At the con clusion of the drawing, the gifts were unwrapped ajid displayed. The hostesses then invited the guests to the dimng room. On a lace-covered lai.le, centered with a bowl of s])ring flowers, there were plates with ice cream and cake, and dishes of mints and nuts. Delicious punch was served with the refreshmejits. Literary Club Winds Up Busy Year The Kappa Pi Beta seems to have been in the lime-light for the past few weeks. It is proud to announce the fol lowing officers for the coming year: President, Betty Martin; Vice- President, Jerry Ford; Sec retary, Mary McGill; and Treas urer, Charlotte Burgess. On Monday, May 2, the entire club was entertained in the Sun Parlor of the Assembly Inn at a party given by Miss Fronde Ken nedy. The room was attractively decorated, the motif being birds. The group was smilingly informed by Dr. Kennedy that they would have bird pie. The pie consisted o' birds’ names with the letters scrambled, from which the cor rect name was to ho spelled. The results produced weird sounding names. Cake, coffee, and ice cream wore served. As a memo of a love ly evening, each guest w'as pre sented with a tiny glass bird. On May 7, the Kappa Pi Beta conducted the morning chapel. The theme of the program was MOTH ER’S DAY. Ten selected contri butions were read at this time by their authors. The contributions consisted of poems and essays, both serious and humorous. CHEF TILLER SHOWS HIS HAND The people who gathered at Montreat for the May Day Program had something more in store for them than an hour’s entertainment. Following the exercises in honor of Queen Ann, the audience w'ent, almost as a body, to the Inn where they gasped again almost as a body, at the sumptuous supper decked in holiday attire. Chef Tiller with his kitchen staff, had covered a table with the most delectable cold dishes imagin able. It was a Smorgasbord Supper — Montreat’s first. “Rut, after all, girls,” said Mrs. Tiller, “May Day comes only once a year!” Annual Dedicated To .Miss E- Hoyt “I believe the S.P.S. has charge of the rest of the program this morning,” said Miss Hoyt. The S.P.S.? On current events day? No news? The door at the right opened — Lib Miller? Frances Brown ? Miss Watkins ? A strange '-entleman ? ? What does it mean ? Then—a murmur broke through the silence. “The annuals are here.” “Oh, grand, the annuals have come'”—and then, an outburst of hand clapp’ng as Mr. Mitchell, the SUN DIAL printer, rose to speak and to present to Miss Watkins the first copy of the 1949 SUN DIAL, of white and gold. Miss Watkins then in turn pre- .sented a copy to Lib, who read the dedication poem—“to a teach er whose sense of humor makes the hard ta.sks seem easy.” It could be Miss Hoyt. “To a class sponsor,” Lib reads on, “Who counsels with wisdom and under standing.” “Oh yes — Miss Hoyt,” say the Seniors. “To a dean whose ideals inspire broader and higher living,” contiues Lib. It must be Miss Hoyt. “To a lady who servos others efficiently, patiently, and graciously,” — it is Miss Hoyt— “with high respect and deep ap- S.C.A. The table was decorated with yellow flowers and candles; tiny nut cups and place cards added to the charm and the serenity of the atmosphere. Miss Anderson is the sponsor for the council. And amid cheers and applause Miss Hoyt was presented her copy.
