BELL TELLS OF (Continued from Page 1) years was a medical missionary to China, has been living in Mon treat since his return from the mission field and is one of the leading surgeons at the Mission Hospital in Asheville. Authorized by the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presby terian Church, U. S., to make this trip. Dr. Bell left Montreat Octob er 17, returning at 3 a. m. Sunday morning, November 6. He had had only a few hours of sleep when he stood before the Montreat congregation. He must have been tired and travel-weary, but noth ing of this could be detected as he graphically depicted his trip. There was a ring in his voice and joy in his face as he told of meeting American missionaries and of seeing the great work of God going forward all over the world. Dr. Bell said that his first im pression of the trip was that of shrinking world. Traveling mostly by air, during the 21 days, he covered four continents, cross ed the equator four times, and visited the largest cities of four nations. Once, from the heart of the Belgian Congo, he had talked by radio to his wife here and been heard by another person in Georg ia. Leaving Miami by plane. Dr. Bell f'rst went to Brazil. There, while visiting in three Presbyterian mission stations, he found a bit of home away from home. In Belem, a city at the mouth of the Amazon river, were he Rev. and Mrs. Don Williams from Black Mountain. Farther south, at Recife was Miss Collette, former student and teacher at Montreat; at the same station he met the father of Naomi Viedri, a Brazilian girl who served in the cafeteria this summer. When he spoke during the chapel exercises at the Agnes-Erskine School for Girls there, two of his former pa tients were among those in the audience. From Brazil, Dr. Bell flew to Africa where he visited many stations. Everything on the con tinent left its impression — he marveled at the abundance of na tural resources, at the sparse pop ulation (Dr. Bell has been accust- Navajos Triumph In Soccer Game The soccer tournament started off with a bang with the Mohawk- Navajo game. It was a close game all the w^ay through with the Navajos winning 2-1. The Chero kee and Hiwassee game was play ed next in line. This was an ex citing game ending with a score of 2-0 in favor of the Hiwassees. Again the Navajos were on the field, this time playing with the Choctaws, and winning 6-2, The Cherokee-Mohawk game followed omed to China), at the luxuriant forests and at the dry, trackless deserts. He was amazed to see millions of acres of land uncult ivated and yet, unending stores of luscious native fruits. He saw a lake with exotic, cobalt - blue waters as breath-taking as Lake Springs, Florida. In the heart of this “darkest continent”, he visit ed a leper colony where the past or had refused to leave as an “ar rested case”; he found schools for American as well as native child ren; he saw modern homes and a hydro-electric plant. He saw a continent that had progressed from the Stone Age to the Air plane Age in sixty years. And he saw yet more - missionaries who seemed able to surmount every obstacle, teachers who laid Christ ian foundations in the lives of tomorrow’s leaders, doctors who fought superstitions and healed ministered to every need, women who sympathized, men who pray ed. He saw; and what he saw re newed his faith in mankind and gave him a greater message for us. Portugal was Dr. Bell’s next stop after leaving Africa. At Lisbon he visited the mission sta tion being supported by a church in Portugal, the Presbyterian Church U. S. and the Presbyter ian Church U.S.A. From there he went on to Paris, to London, then across the Atlantic to New York and home. A tour of half the world in 21 days! He had enjoyed a rare priv ilege and through his inspiring reports, many will be able to share his adventures and his en thusiasm for world missions. with a score of 4 for the Mo hawks and 2 for the Cherokees. Several other sports on the cam pus now are table tennis, deck tennis, shuffleboard, and bad minton. For you girls who aren’t yet acquainted with these games, here are a few facts. Table tennis is a form of min iature tennis modeled after the court game. Though the game ap pears easy, the beginner finds it not quite so simple when he once starts playing. The game can be very interesting when the players have learned a good technique. Like badminton, deck tennis has only recently become popular as a hand sport. The game is offi cially played with a rubber ring, which is tossed from one player to another across the net, until one player fails to return it, or it lands outside the court. This game may be played as singles, doubles, or mass. Shuffleboard may be played by two or four players. The object of the game is to make a score as high as possible by playing your own discs on the scoring spaces and by preventing your opponent from scoring. In the game badminton, as in tennis and ping pong, a net, a bird, and rackets are used. It may be played with two or four play ers. The game is started when the first server drops the bird and gives it a scoop just before it reaches the floor and sends it across the net. The bird is sent back and forth across the net un til the end of the game. Phone 4881 QUALITY Dry Cleaning Co. “ A FRIENDLY INTEREST IN YOUR PERSONAL APPEARANCE” Black Mountain, N. C.
