THE DIALETTE
Ride Your Hobby Horse
M. Gonano
Everyone has a hobby. Maybe
some just haven’t put it down
in black and white or just don’t
have another piece for that col
lection which is in its first stage
or perhaps the scrapbook hasn’t
been bought or made for that col
lection of snapshots, leaves, or
flowers.
After Christmas there will be
a display of hobbies in the Home
Economics room, and how wonder
ful it would be if every student
and faculty member had some
thing to display! Hobbies of all
sorts are expected. A variety of
collections, writings, paintings,
sketches, stamps, portfolios of
favorite music and poems, knit
ting, needlework, wood carving
and etc.
So work on your hobby during
Christmas and be proud to dis
play it. But just don’t end it
there - keep it up as long as you
live, for hobbies add to joy,
health, social, spiritual, and men
tal well being of an individual.
Hobbies are fun! Hobbies are val
uable! So start riding your hob
by horse now!
Many Alumnae Return
For Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving week end was en
tirely too short - at least, that is
what all the guests and their host
esses thought. Prom the first
shout of vvelcome to the last wave
of a hand in farewell. Montreat
girls and former Montreat girls
tried to crowd all kinds of fun in
to the short time. Some had 24
hours; some had four days. The
church service, the soccer game,
the banquet, the dormitory fests,
and the glimpse of rules again -
all were a reminder of days at
Montreat. All of us were glad to
welcome Pat Cox, Betty Jean
Genoble, Sybil Mackorell, Martha
Atkinson and her sister, Winnie
Ferguson, Betty Mae Hoylman,
Polly Powers, Betty and Billie
Whittle, Ruth Fisher, Anne Mc-
Clintock, Mildred Jones, and Is
abelle Robertson.

Your Support
We’re going to have an annual.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But it’s
not so much a statement of simp
licity as it is of determination.
We’re DETERMINED to have an
annual, and we’re asking everyone
to help us finance it. It’s no sec
ret that advertisers are reluctant
to part with their money this
year, and right now we are in
danger of falling below our budg
et. If that happens, we’ll have to
cut the annual. That thought is
repulsive to us, so we’re doing
the only thing we know to do:
is.suing a call for help.
While you’re home Christmas
ask your parents, uncles, neigh
bors - ask anyone - if they would
n’t like to give $2 or $3 and have
their names put on our Sponsor’s
page in the annual. Any contri
bution will be accepted, but the
lowest amount entitling a printed
name will be .$1.00. Our goal i5
at least one dollar for every stu
dent in High School and College.
Surely you can raise that much!
Remember that our annual de
pends on you. Won’t you help us
make it the best one ever?
The S. P. S. is offering a prize
to the person getting the most
ontributions for our Sponsor’s
page. Three weeks will give you
ample time to work for that prize.
Come back with your pocket books
bulging!

Well-Known Artists
Exhibit Work Here
A. Mereness
As Mrs. Ledford, our speaker
of the fifth, said in her introduc
tion, “the gallery of oil paintings
on exhibition this week is on its
maiden voyage.” Among the art
ists whose work is being shown
are both local and nationally
known men and women. Mrs. Led
ford herself is a landscapist of
note in Asheville.
To the assembled group of
Montreat faculty and students,
she gave an informal discussion
on the art of watercolor painting,
while working on a snow scene to
illustrate her points. Two short
stories by Mrs. Ledford were
highly appreciated.
After the lecture, the audience
adjoumed to view the paintings
and enjoy refreshments served by
some of the girls. Predominatetly
landscapes, the pictures ranged
from the smaller size to larger
canvases. Some of the finest were
“Shelby” by Dorothy Green, “Piaz-
zo” by White, and “First Snow
Fair by the lecturer.
We strongly recommend your
seeing this collection if you have
not already done so. It is unfortu
nate that more of us have not
taken advantage of this opportun
ity. After you have stud'ed the
paintings, vote for the one YOU
would most like to possess. But
whether you feel inclined to cast
a vote or not, visit the gallery.
You will find it well worth the
time it takes.
