AS A NEW YEAR BEGINS . • .
As President of your S. C. A., I want to take this opportunity
to wish each one of you a very happy New Year. When we look ahead
we often wonder just what this year^holds in store for us. That we
cannot know. But you have often heard the saying that we don’t get
any more out of life than what we put into it. And so, to a certain
extent we can determine what v/e are going to get out of this year
together. Let’s all try to do something each day that will add to the
joy and happiness of our life here on the campus.
That same saying can be applied to our spiritual life - we will
only get out of it what we put into it. How can we expect God to
guide us and give us spiritual blessings if we are not willing to give
Him part of our time? May we all strive this year to give of our
time, our talents and our all to Him who gave Himself for us; and
we will find that our lives will be much happier because we are liv
ing for Him.

—Campus Reflections—
By Betty Gibbs
Facts on the Feudal Hierarchy
are whizzing through my brain
in sad disorder and I find I have
no reflections except some rather
bitter ones on the subject of
EXAMS. From the general at
mosphere around Montreat, though,
I have found that I’m not alone —
everybody is in the same state of
mind! And that is comforting -
if it’s possible to be comforted be
fore Tuesday at five!
“Today the year is young and clean
Like freshly fallen snow,
The ruts and scars are gone.
And we are called to new and brave adventure.”
Adventure!, That’s a wonderful word! It brings to mind var
ious visions of great ships, of exciting expeditions, of thrills and
dangers, of something new. This year let’s answer the call to ad
venture’- not the lion-killing, hair-raising kind - but adventure into
camradeship and happiness. The hurts we caused yesterday by un
kindness or by negligence can be healed even now by smiles and
friendliness and expecially by love.
Adventurers have to be brave! This term lets not be afraid of
tests, of term papers, or of any such “demons” of learning. Thous
ands before us have lived through such terrible things, and are now
leading almost normal lives.
Let’s not be afraid to try anything - whether it be a short story
in English, a talk in vespers, or a long-shot in basketball. This year
let’s go forward expectantly, and get the best out of Montreat, by
putting out best into it - our abilities, our school spirit, and our love.

But I don’t believe the “general
atmosphere” mntioned above can
be blamed entirely on exams. It’s
hard to say what an atmosphere
consists of, but I’ve noticed that
it encludes rather wan appear
ances, soft mutterings, and vague
attention on the part of the girls.
Uh-huh, exactly the same symp
toms as Spring Fever! And is it
any wonder? This beautiful
weather we’ve been having is more
than enough to bring on such an
illness. Those of you who enjoy
it are lucky - twice in one year!!
Over in Fellowship the girls
are stepping high on the now
floors — and are mighty proud
of the covers on the sofas and
chairs in the lobby. Barkis has
nothing on F. B. - she’s had a
face-lifting, too! And her new
neighbor is getting to be quite
presentable looking from the out
side. The new building is quite a
handsome structure -and is well
on the way to completion. I noticed
today how bare the side looks with
out the cement mixer, elevator and
whatever else was filling all that
space. Bare - but kind of nice.

I don’t guess there was a girl
in school that wasn’t inspired by
Dr. Eddy’s chapel talk - and ex
pecially by her challenge to go
out and try seeing the world our
selves. Her stories of women in
the Orient were inspiring (to try
to describe them), encouraging,
and fascinating. And I think we
could put Mrs. Eddy right with
that group of women she spoke
of - she’s doing her part.
Don’t think those facts on the
Feudal Hierarchy are still in my
head - they aren’t! So now I can

exams, fellow students! I sym-
