NO. 7 MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA MARCH, 1950 Black Mountain Arts Club Holds Open Meeting The Black Mountain Arts Club, an organization with more than a hundred members, held an open meeting in Gaither Hall on Thurs day evening, April 6. Several members of the Montreat faculty belong to this club, and six of them are members of the Creative Writing Division of the club — Mrs. White, Mrs. Macaulay, and Misses Kennedy, Watkins, Mor row, and Holmes. The program for the evening was under the joint auspices of the Writing Division and the Mus ic Division, of which Miss Ken nedy and Mrs. A. W. McDougle of Black Mountain are chairmen. Miss Mary Young of Black Moun tain was in the chair, in the ab sence of the president, the Rev. Mr. Deihl of Swannanoa. Except for necessary announcements made by the secretary. Miss Mor row, business was dispensed with. The program included a piano number, “Sunken Cathedral,” by Miss Doris Byrd of Asheville, two groups of Scotch songs by Mr. Weatherly of Swannanoa, an ad dress on American Literature by Dr. Elford C. Morgan, Dean of Converse College, and the pres entation of prizes for original writing to seven students from the high schools of the region, Mrs. Katherine White, who had served as chairman of the commit tee of the Writing Division which conducted the writing contest pre sented prizes to the following students: Tinka Crawford, first prize, and Fred Hunt, second prize, from Black Mountain; Linda Watt, first prize, and Aileen Sawy er second, from Warren Wilson; Wilma Church from Swannanoa; Martha Dabney, first and Terry Kane, second, from Montreat School for Girls. Montreat Dramatic Club Attends State Festival The Montreat College Dramatic Club under the direction of Miss Dorothy Boardman attended the State Festival of the Carolina Dramatic Association March 31 and April 1 at the University of North Carolina. This festival is held annually with high schools, junior colleges, and senior col leges from all parts of North Car olina participating. The Montreat Dramatics Club presented GRANDMA PULLS THE STRINGS, which it has giv en both here and in Asheville. Miss Boardman stated that the club did not go to the Festival as competitors of the experienced and established college dramatics clubs, but merely to gain exper ience and to learn. SPCCTS PAT Montreat is to have Sports’ Day. Tentative plans have been given for this big event which will be Monday, April 24. Here’s just an example of what is to happen— track events, tests of skills and ability, individual sports, and team games. Teams will be com posed of the Freshmen and Junior classes as one team, and the Soph omores and Seniors as the other team. All you Sophs and Frosh get with your sister classes and let’s have some real competition. The big event of the day will be a volleyball game—“M” Club vs. Varsity. After the game, there will be a picnic supper followed by a square dance. The members of Kappa Pi Beta Society, of which Miss Kennedy is sponsor, graciously served as ushers and were hostesses in As sembly Inn lobby after the pro gram to the members of the Mon treat Faculty, members of the Arts Club, and their guests in honor of the guests on the pro gram. GIBBS, GODERT, WARDUW AND HOLT WILL LEAD CAMPUS ACTIVITIES FOR COMING YEAR Betty Gibbs Cabinet Officers Chosen For 50-51 With the exception of secretary to the Cabinet, the offices in the student governing body have been filled. Ann Bristow of Inverness, Ala., is the Vice-Pres. of the Student body. Other officers are Rebecca Glenn and Carolyn Wil liams, House Presidents; Rebecca Ray and Jean Nunalee, Ass’t House Presidents; Pat Harley, President of Senior Class; Lois Leisinger, President of Junior Class; and Helen Duke, President of Sophomore Class. SPORTS DAY MONDAY, APRIL 24 AVatch For Announcements Betty Gibbs, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. L. B. Gibbs, of Clayton, Georgia, has been chosen by popular vote of the student body as 1950-51 President of the Student Government Association. A member of the rising senior class, Betty has served on the Cabinet before, having been As sistant House president of Fellow ship Dormitory during her soph- more year. For two years she has been a member of the Staff of Student Publications. After her graduation from college, she plans to do D. R. E. work. She is major ing in Bible and Religious Educa tion and minoring in Music. The President of the Student Christian Association for the com ing year is Agnes Godert, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Godert of Panama City, Florida. Agnes, an honor roll student, has served on the Council as Assistant Vice- president for the past year. She, too, plans to enter church work upon graduation; hoping that she can serve the Home Mission field. As president of the Athletic Association, Alice Wardlaw will take another step forward as a Board member. During her sopho more year she served as Co-Hiker and this year she has been Vice- President. She is majoring in Bible and minoring in Phys. Ed. Jane Holt, who has served the Staff most faithfully during the past two years as Literary Editor and Business Manager, has been elected Editor-in-Chief of the Publication Staff for 50-61. So well-qualified is she for this of fice that the students chose her by a vast majority at the straw vot ing. Jane, daughter of Mrs. Ira D. Holt of Montreat, is majoring in Biology and minoring in Phys. Ed.
