FACULTY ARTIST
Twice during the past year, the stu
dents and faculty of Montreat College and
guests from surrounding communities and
distant places have had the privilege of
hearing Mr. John Sinclair in faculty re
citals—on October 14 and. March 17.
One of the new additions to the Music
Department of Montreat College, Mr. Sin
clair has proved to be a pianist of great
talent, brilliance, and virtuosity. His pro
grams have included selections by Bach,
Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Mac-
Dowell, and Beryl Rubinstein. Featured on
his concert in March was Franck’s Varia
tions Symphoniques, a brilliant composi
tion for two pianos. He was assisted by
Miss Elizabeth Pappas, who played the
orchestral accompaniment as arranged by
Edwin Hughes.
Mr. Sinclair has also displayed his skill
on many other occasions, serving as ac
companist for the Inner Choir, pianist for
chapel periods during the week, accompan
ist for Miss Mirta Borges, and as guest
artist on the programs of clubs in neigh
boring communities.
A native of Tyler, Texas, Mr. Sinclair
graduated from high school there; he was
graduated in 1947 from Louisiana State
University with a B. M. degree. He also
received a diploma in piano from the Juill-
iard School of Music and an M. M. degree
from the Eastman School of Music of
the University of Rochester. During the
war he served three years in the Army
Air Corps, part of the time as chaplain’s
assistant and organist. He has given re
citals in New York City; Boston; Pawl
ing, New York, Tyler, Texas, and several
other cities. He has also played at Carnegie
Hall at the opening of the Third War

PRESBYTERIAL WEEK |
Montreat’s first observance of Presby-
terial Week has been a rich spiritual ex
perience for all of us.
Special chapel services were held in
Gaither Chapel each morning Tuesday
through Friday, April 17-20. They were
conducted by the following ministers, all
of whom are from Asheville Presbytery:
The Rev. H. B. Dendy, D. D., Editor, South
ern Journal, Weaverville, N. C.; The Rev.
W. M. Fountain, Jr., Malvern Hills Pres
byterian Church, Asheville, N. C.; The
Rev. W. G. ’Thomas, Pastor of West Ashe
ville Presbyterian Church; and E. G.

Expressions of gratitude for these in
spirational services have been heard daily,
with enthusiasm growing after each ser
