MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA
SEPTEMBER, 1951
Staff Selects Twelve New Members
I New Faculty In Review |
This year we are again happy to wel
come the newcomers to the Montreat Col
lege faculty. We are proud of each one
of them, and we feel that this is going
to be one of the best years that we’ve
had. Here are a few interesting facts
about our new teachers.
Miss Mary Elizabeth Wilson is a grad
uate of Vanderbilt University in Tenn
essee where she received her B.A. degree.
She was granted a scholarship for a
master’s degree in history and did her
graduate work at Peabody College, after
which she attended the University of
Hawaii and Columbia Theological Semin
ary in Decatur, Ga. Miss Wilson taught in
a mission school in Honolulu for three
years. She now holds the position of Dean
of Students and teaches Freshman Bible.
Our registrar and teacher of shorthand,
Miss Princie Maphet, originally from
Kentucky, received her A.B. degree from
Flora MacDonald College and her Master
of Science from U. N. C. She also had
two summer sessions at Bowling Green
Business University, Kentucky. Before
coming to Montreat Miss Maphet taught
at Flora MacDonald, served as assistant
registrar there, and held that position at
W. C. U. N. C.
Teacher of theory, organ, and voice,
Mr. Robert Thatcher is a graduate of
, the American Conservatory of Music in
Chicago. After his graduation, Mr. Thatch
er taught in Mattoon, Illinois, his home
town. Mr. Thatcher directed the church
choir here in Montreat this summer.
The librarian. Miss Virginia Buch
anan, originally from the southwest
ern part of Virginia, is a graduate of
Virginia Intermont Junior College in
Bristol, Va. Receiving her B.A. degree
from King College, she did graduate work
at George Peabody College in Nashville,
Tennessee for her master’s degree. Be
fore coming to Montreat, Miss Buchanan
was librarian in the public schools of
Virginia. —^Turn to Page 3
Drs. Belk And Holt
Are Chapel Speakers
During the first week of school, Mon
treat was honored to have two noted
Presbyterian ministers speak during chapel
period. The guest speakers were Dr. J.
Blanton Belk and Dr. A. C. Holt.
Dr. Belk spoke to the students on “What
Is Your Life?” and “The Art of Growing
Up.” In his first talk. Dr. Belk discussed
the difference between people- who run
their own lives and those who put God at
the center of all their plans. When we put
God first, this brings beauty of character,
useful service, and spiritual power. In his
second talk he told us that when we be
come mature adults we act independently
on the basis of our deepest moral con
victions, take responsibility, and make
life’s basic decisions to live in conformity
with the will of God.
Dr. Holt spoke to us on the “Four
Codes of Life”: the code of treachery;
the code of indifference; the code of
honor; and the code of service, which is
the Christian code of life.
Both Dr. Holt and Dr. Belk are closely
connected with Montreat. Dr. Holt is a
trustee of Montreat College. Dr. Belk
spent many summers here as a youth
when his father owned a cottage here,
and he was a classmate of Dr. McGregor
at Davidson College.

Miss Elizabeth Maxwell
New Sponsor
We know that the tension and suspense
have been great since try-outs for the
Staff first began. It was very hard for
us to select a few girls from the many
who submitted articles for the Dialette,
and it has been even harder for us to
keep it a secret, but now it can be told.
The first member of our staff to be
chosen this year was Miss Elizabeth Max
well. Miss Maxwell is to guide the staff
in her position as sponsor. We are very
honored to have her and we feel that it
is going to be a great pleasure working
with her.
Elinor Ammons and Elizabeth Stewart
will serve as our able feature editors.
Elinor, a sophomore, retains this position
that she held with the staff last year. Lib,
a freshman, has had much experience in
this work, having been the editor of her
high school paper and annual.
This year we just couldn’t narrow the
freshmen to two reporters, so we chose
Margaret Leech, Hilda Flecker, and Joan
Hunsberger. These girls have all served
on their high school papers also.
The title of Sports Editor is bestowed
upon Olivia Bishop, another Frosh. Olivia
is well qualified for this position on the
staff, for she was sports editor of her
high school paper.
Frosh Shela Gregory will provide the
chuckles with her humor, for she is our
new Humor Editor.
Our Art and Publicity Manager has had
six years of art, and she is none other
than Leta Miller.
Lovely and attractive Jo Ella Dunaway
will be the girl who will be bringing in
those ads for the paper and annual since
she is the Assistant Advertising Manager.
Last, but not least, are the hardest-
worked girls on the staff—the typists.
We have chosen Frances Bridges, Marg
aret Langston, and Freida White.
Well, there you have the editorial and
business staff of the Dialette.
Congratulations, girls, we’re looking
forward to a successful year together!
