Those who are “heads-of-sports” are; softball, Ann Fenton; basketball, Ruth Wooten; tennis, June King; soccer, Joan Letson; volley ball, Ruby McCray; individual recreational sports, Virginia Blackburn. The co-hikers are two loyal Choctaws—Polly Brown and Kathy Mull. Next year the tribes will be dissolved and the Blue and Gold teams will replace them. The representativie for the Gold team is Julia Trayham, a rising sophomore, and the Blue team will be represented by a rising junior, Mary Jane Gillespie. The student body has selected Jean Booth as the head cheer-leader for the ensuing year. That capable artist, Heide Funke, will continue to serve as publicity manager. This is an excellent selection of girls with fine athletic skills and true sports manship. Good luck to you in ’52 and 53! The student body is behind you 100%. Presentation 01 Athletic Awards It was indeed a good day when athletic honors were given to six Montreat girls. First Jeanette Nash, president of the AM A, made a short talk on sportsmanship and qualifications for numerals and let ters. Then Carolyn Williams, Martha Get- singer, and Frances Curry were presented numeral's indicating the year in which they will graduate from college. Rebecca Glenn and Helen Duke each received an "M”. Montreat girls are in the midst of individual sports tournaments when the DIALETTE goes to press. At present, the badminton tournament is well under way, but not far enough to give any results, yet. Within the next few weeks the tennis tournaments will also be played. Remember I promised to tell you who came out on top in volleyball? Well, this time we give three cheers for the Chero- kees! They all pitched in and gave the other squaws a lot of stiff competition. Yes, to the volleyball champs—Cherokees —heartiest congratulations! The main sport in the current lime-light, however, is softball. Although the tourna ment has not begun at the time of this writing, many grand practice games have been played. We have seen several home- runs and even a few “grand-slammers” (home runs with the bases loaded!). Yes, it is wonderful to get down to the ole ball’ field again. Let’s really make the best of these games—they are the last ones in which the Hiwassees, Cherokees, Choctaws and Mohawks will compete you know! Then, “Enter, BLUE and GOLD!’’ tion in all phases of the sports prog;ram. After Jeanette had completed her dis tribution of these awards. Miss Smith, advisor to the AMA, came forward and presented to Jeanette Nash a chevron, the highest athletic honor which can be’ be stowed upon a “Montreater.” The entire student body applauded, for no one deserved this award more than Jeanette. She not only has been president of the AMA, but she was chosen as a senior superlative to represent sportsmanship. Congratulations — all of you! You deserve it.
