VOL. 18, NO. 5 MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA FEBRUARY, 1953 Student Body Elects King, Krieger, Broom, And Gillespie Miss Warth The student bodies of Montreat College and Montreat High School are fortunate in having the opportunity to hear so many outstanding artists during the school year. One of the most outstanding and most talked about concerts that has been given during the past few years was the piano recital presented at Gaither Hall on Sat urday, February 14, by Miss Sallie F. Warth. This was Miss Warth’s first concert per formance in Montreat, and her exceptional mastery of the keyboard kept the audience entranced. A storm of applause recalled her again and again to the stage even ..after her encore. Miss . Warth, from Huntington, West Vir ginia, graduated from Oberlin Conserva tory in 1951 with a Bachelor of Music de gree. She received her Master of Music degree from Indiana State University in 1952. She came to Montreat High School to begin her teaching career in 1952, and says her plans are to continue to study music and to teach it. Her concert program included; Italian concerts in three movements, by Bach; —Turn to Page 6 MONTREAT FACULTY I ATTENDS CONFERENCE | Miss Miles, Miss Hoyt, Mrs. White, and Mr. Brewer attended a Presbyterian Fac ulty Conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, on February 21 and 22. Some of the speak ers at the conference were Dr. Hunter B. Blakely, Secretary of the Division of Higher Education, Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church, U. S.; Dr. E. Fay Campbell, Secretary of the Division of Higher Education, Board of Christian Education, Presbyterian Church, U. S. A.; Dr. Arthur R. McKay, pastor of,, the First Presbyterian Church, Binghamton,^ New York and former Professor of Philosophy at Russell Sage College, Troy, N. Y.; Dr. E. R. Hunter, Dean of Maryville College; and Dr. William G. Pollard, Director of Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies. Dr. Pollard was recently ordained in the Episcopal ministry. There were several other speakers and some instructive round table discussions. Easter Pageant 1953-54 CAMPUS LEADERS The Student Body of Montreal College has big news .as a result of its popular elections completed last week. It now has four new major officers to head, the 1953- 54 student government. June King is president of the Student Body. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. King, of Pennington Gap, Virginia. June has been a leader in every phase of campus life during her three years at Mon treal. She has served the S.C.A. for two years as Chairman of the Comradeship Group, and of the Art and Publicity Group. She has served in the Cabinet of S.G.A. as presi dent of the Junior class; and has supported her publications staff by contributing articles for the Dialette. She has proven her interest in sports by being head of tennis on the Board, and by last year’s fine job as head cheerleader. She has al ready received her first athletic award, her 1954 numerals. She is active in various campus clubs, having been a member of both the College Chorus and the choir. Ellinore Krieger is the new editor of our yearbook, the SUN DIAL. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Krieger of Portsmouth, Virginia. Ellinore, better known as “EK”, should be termed (in her own language) a very “rare soul.” She is versatile and witty, having superior gifts of originality. She loves the very word SUN DIAL and knows it as well as she loves it. She has served at the elbow of the editor for two years as Literary Edi tor. She is at home with the pen too, and thus for two years has been president of Kappa Pi Beta, honorary literary society. Ellinore has also been, during her college career, vice-president of her freshman class, a member of the Dramatics Club, and of the College Chorus.
