MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA May, 1953 McKinnon, Commencement Speaker Department Of Music Holds Spring Concert On May 22, the Department of Music presented its annual Spring Concert in Gaither Chapel. Featured on the pro gram were the College Chorus and the High School Glee Club. Accomoanists for the evening were Misses Sallie Warth, Frances Mouzon, and Betty Down. The College Chorus presented several selections by Brahms. The first group called “Three Love Songs”, contained “Like the Sunset’s Evening Splendor”, “Bird in Air Will Stray Afar”, and “Seat Thyself, My Dearest Heart.” The second group was “Songs for Women’s Voices”, Opus 17, and included “Greetings”, and “I hear a Harp.” Two French horn play ers from Lee Edward’s High School as sisted in the accompaniment of this work. The High School Glee Club sang “Ded ication” by Franz, “0, Dear, What Can the Matter Be”, an old English song, “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes”, by Cain, “Three Little Maids”, and “The Baboons’ Wedding” by Delaney. Also on the program was a duet, “La Ci Darem La Mano”, sung in Italian by Ann Broom and Francis Green. This duet is from “Don Giovanni”, an opera by Mozart; Ann sang the part of Zerlina with Mr. Green taking the title roll. Mary Ann Smoak sang two numbers, “An meinem Herzen, an meiner Brust”, and “Du Ring an meinem Finger”, from the song cycle “Frauenliebe Und Leben” by Schumann and “Vervovgenheit” by Hugo Wolf. Ivy Dee Chaffin, pianist, played one of Mendelssohn’s songs without words, “Hunting Song”. 1953 MARSHALS Faculty chooses the Marshals for the Commencement exercises: Freshman Jewell Bailey Sophomore Dorothy Todd Junior Mary Jane Gillespie Rev. John H. McKinnon Montreat College Blues Winners In Tournament The Blue Team of Montreat College, composed of the Junior and Freshman classes, has won the Athletic Cup this year, 1952-53. The Blue Team has been victorious in soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball, plus the individual sports. Congratulations, Blue Team! You fought hard, played well, and deserve the champ ionship! Finals Set For Gaither Chapel, Monday, May 25 We are happy to announce that the guest speaker for the Commencement exercises this year will be the Reverend John H. McKinnon, Jr., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, Tenn essee. The Commencement exercises will be held in Gaither Chapel on Monday, May 25, at 10:00 a.m. At this time, diplomas will be presented to the 1953 graduates of Montreat College and Montreat High School. The Reverend John H. McKinnon, Jr. was born in Tampa, Florida. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from David son College and his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia. He has also done post-graduate work in Scotland and Germany. He has held pastorates in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. All who know Reverend McKinnon like him well; all who have heard him heartily agree that he is an excellent speaker. He will be the guest speaker for the D.R.E.
