VOL. 20, NO. 3 MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA NOV.DEC., 1954 Jo Ella Bennett Elected May Queen Cameron Is Elected Freshman President The Freshman Class on November 2 elected the following officers: Pansie Cam eron, president; Peggy Jo Miller, vice-pres ident; Ann Bullard, secretary; and Lucille Blackwell, treasurer. This election followed the six-weeks’ orientation period in which the new stu dents have an opportunity to become acquainted with each other. Pansie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Cameron of Raleigh. While attend ing high school, Pansie served as president of the student body as well as of the F.H.A. She was captain of the basketball team and a member of the annual staff. Since coming to Montreat, Pansie has made the dean’s list with all A’s. For her major subject she has chosen Christian Educa tion. Peggy Jo is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene T. Miller of Stony Point. She has chosen elementary education as her major subject. Ann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Builard of Marietta, Georgia. -She, also, is majoring in Christian Education. Lucille is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Blackwell of Hendersonville. Elementary education will be her major subject. Morris, Miller, Moser And Traynham Are Also Chosen Senior Superlatives Honor Pledge Signed In Student Body Meeting By Genevieve Landrum The Student Body participated in the pledge signing service on Thursday, No vember 4, in Gaither Chapel. The chapel was lit only with candles; and Cabinet members with candles stood at the end of the front benches, showing the different classes where they were to sit. Louise Bennett opened the service with a devotional, after which Evelyn Morris spoke on the signing of the pledge as a matter of personal honor. She pointed out that in signing this pledge the stu dent gave her word to uphold the honor system and the standards of Montreat Col lege. At the close of Evelyn’s talk, a small group of the girls sang “Lord, I Want to Be A Christian in My Heart.’’ The girls left the chapel according to classes and went to certain rooms, where they signed the pledge, after reading it aloud. Then they returned to the chapel for the remainder of the service. The service closed with a hymn, a prayer, and the singing of the Alma Mater. The recently elected 1954 Senipr Super latives are: Mrs. Stanley Bennett, May Queen; Evelyn Morris, True Spiritual Vis ion; Leta Miller, Joy in Learning; Mrs. William Moser, Graciousness; and Julia Traynham, Sportsmanship. Jo Ella, daughter of Mr. S. W. Dunaway of Laheville, Texas, is the wife of the , Rev. Stanley Bennett, present minister of the Montreat Presbyterian Church. As a freshman, Jo Ella was Assistant Advertising Manager of the Sun Dial; her sophomore year, she was Advertising Man ager of the Sun Dial, a member of the S.C.A. Council, and chairman of the Red Cross organization. During her junior year, she was Assistant Editor of the Sun Dial, junior class representative in the May Court, and a prayer group leader. Jo Ella has been a member of the Lite Service Group, church choir, Thalians, and C.C.U.N. Evelyn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Morris from Montgomery, West Virginia, is now president of the Student Govern ment Association. As a freshman, Eveiyn was class treas urer. During her sophomore year, she was treasurer and leader of the Steward- —Cont’d on Page 2 Annual Thanksgiving Festivities Are Held Thanksgiving Day at Montreat is always an event to remember, and the 1954 holi day was no exception. The customs of Thanksgiving were followed -in a iovely fashion, so that each person was inspired by the occasion. The annual banquet was the high point of Turkey Day festivities. The Senior class decorations followed the traditional theme of autumn and transformed the cafeteria completely. The program was begun by Senior class president Margaret Barrett, who welcomed students, faculty and guests, followed by Rev. Stanley Bennett with the invocation. Entertainment was provided by a choir group who sang several numbers. Dr. J. R. McGregor, college president, presented several prominent guests and introduced the main “"Speaker of the evening. Miss Joan Winmill.. Miss Winmill said that England was quite grateful to America for many things, but that the evangelistic crusade conduct ed by Dr. Billy Graham and his team was by far the most wonderful thing we have ever given them. Miss Winmill told how she had worked for and achieved success as an actress, only to find that there was something lacking' in her life, something which fame didn’t bring. It was only when she took the Lord Jesus into her heart and dedicated her life to Him, during the London crusade, that she found this peace and joy for which she had longed, she told us.
