MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA OCTOBER, 1955 A Letter From Doctor McGregor Dr. and Mrs. Dunford, New Music Instructors Dr. Fred Breiver Rejoins Faculty By Trudye Windle Mr. Fred Brewer, professor of Biology, Chemistry, and Physieal Science at Mon treat College, has returned after a leave of absence of one year. Mr. Brewer studied at the University of Tennessee, completing the residence re quirements for a Doctor’s Degree in Biolo gical Science. While there Mr. Brewer had a teachers’ assistantship in Botany and Zoology. Mr. Brewer, we are glad that you are back. In Memoriam Whereas, God in His wisdom has called Miss Nannie G. Watkins to her Eternal rest, and Whereas, she was one time Principal of the Montreat Normal School and, after an interval in Cuba as a missionary, re turned to Montreat College and served faithfully for many years as a teacher of English and Spanish; therefore, be it Resolved, That the Montreat College Faculty expresses its appreciation for her un tiring service to the College, and for her deep interest in the students. Resolved, That we extend to her family our deep sympathy, and prayers that the Great Comforter may be near them in their bereavement. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family, and a copy re corded in the minutes of the October faculty meeting, and a copy be published in the DIALETTE. By Mary H. Sullivan Dr. and Mrs. Dunford, new additions to our Faculty and Music Department, have landed in Montreat on a loud note. We are thrilled to have them with us and are looking forward to an eventful year. Both Dr. and Mrs. Dunford received Bachelor of Music degrees from Salem College in Winston-Salem, N. C., and their Master of Music Degrees in Composition from the University of Texas. It was in- tei’esting to note that Mrs. Dunford was the first woman to receive an MM in Com position at the University of Texas. Dr. Dunford has done graduate work in Musicology at the University of Michigan and has received a PhD. in Composition from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. He is a member of the arranging staff in the Omaha Nebraska Symphony Orchestra and has had works performed by the Eastman-Roch- cster Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Howard Hanson. Dr. Dunford was Director of Music at the South Carolina School for the Blind. He was considered an author ity on teaching the blind and has had his articles published in twelve different languages. Mrs. Dunford has done graduate work under “The” Edwin Hughes in New York City. While in Rochester she was chief cataloguer of the Sibley Music Library at the Eastman School of Music at the U. of Rochester. She was Instructor in Voice and Director of the Chorus at the South Carolina School for the Blind in Spartan burg. “She built it into one of the finest musical organizations of its kind”, and was requested to give a command per formance before the Governor of South Carolina. —Turn to Page 2 Dear Friends: Isn’t it difficult to believe that when you read this, more than a month will have passed since you came to Montreat College? Those who have been here be fore can understand why at Montreat time seems to be faster than the speediest jet bomber. Perhaps for you new students, it has been a surprise. You have happy memories of the eordial, hearty, and earn est welcome which was given to you by students and faculty, and how much has been done in the dormitories, on the cam pus, and the classrooms to make the be ginning delightful and inspiring and hap py- All of us at Montreat have been helped by the way in which you have responded. Your interest, your full participation, and your eager and ambitious efforts assure all of us that we are going to have an excellent year. We will be increasingly proud and thankful for that which you are and so we joyfully watch you continue to develop into all the loveliness of beau tiful, Christian womanhood. We believe you have found here a Christian atmosphere and a Christian pro gram for the whole life which challenges your best and tempts you to respond with all your heart. Your zest and fine spirit in the recreational, social, and athletic program bring genuine happiness and fun to all of us. We know that in all of this wc receive aecording to the investment of our life we put into it, that we find our selves as we lose ourselves for others.
