Student Officers Elected for 1959-60
Camp, Worrell, Key, Hampton, Powell, McGoogan, Miller
During the week of April 7-11, designated
by Cabinet as the week of elections, the
campus leaders for next year emerged.
Due to the fact that the college is being
converted to a junior status, these officers
were elected from the present freshman
class and will not actually take office un
til September. They will work for the re
mainder of the year as “trainees” to those
who are currently holding the positions.
Glenn Camp, a 20-year-old Henderson
ville resident, was elected president of the
Student Government Association. He has
served as freshman class president this year
and has therefore had experience on Cab
inet. He is the first male student to hold
this office at Montreat College.
In the Hendersonville-Asheville area,
Glenn has sung with the Gospelettes
Quartet on his family’s radio program. He
is a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.
His major field of study is mathematics.
The Student Christian Association will
have as its president 19-year-old Julia Wor
rell, a native of Fayetteville, N. C. Julia
is majoring in Bible; she has had no prev

ious experience on the S.C.A. Council, but
before attending Montreat she was pres
ident of the Fayetteville Young Life group,
and leader in her church, the Snyder
Memorial Baptist. She has expressed the
belief that the proposed combination of
S.C.A. groups will strengthen the associa
tion. Julia is her class representative to
the May Court.
Lorene Key, 10 years old, from Reids-
ville, N. C., is the new president of the
Montreat Athletic Association. This year
she has been active in the sports program,
and also in campus business activities (her
major is in the field of business). She has
stated that the A.M.A. program will be
somewhat modified next year, but the
actviities will be just as varied and will
be planned to meet the important need of
strengthening body as well as mind. Lorene
is a member of the First Presbyterian
Church in Reidsville.
Another 18-year-old, Bettye Hampton,
from Abbeville, S. C., was elected to the
editorship of the Dialette. She has served
as feature writer of the paper this year.
She was formerly editor of her high school
newspaper, of the newspaper for the Synod
of S. C. Senior High Fellowship, and a
member of Quill and Scroll. Her major is
in Bible, and she also is interested in Eng
lish, music, and journalism.
Other activities for Bettye this year have
included serving as treasurer of her class
and singing first soprano with the Montreat
College Singers.
The Sun Dial will also have a South
Carolinian as its editor. Barbara Powell,
18, is from Wellford. In the field of stu
dent publications, she was editor of the
James F. Byrnes High School newspaper.
At Montreat, Barbara is secretary of the
Freshman Class, and sings second soprano
with the Montreat College Singers. About
her attitude concerning the college future
she has said, “I feel that the school is go
ing forward. There is a good group of
leaders in the Freshman Class.”
Dot McGoogan, a 19-year-old from Miami,
Florida, has been elected to serve as Social
Chairman. She has been her class repre
sentative to the social committee this year.
She was a high school beauty queen and
has also made various appearances as a
dancer. She has excelled in sports at Mon
treat, being on the varsity basketball and
soccer teams. In Miami, she is a member
of Rivera Presbyterian Church.
The vice-president of the S.G.A. will be
Linda Miller, a 19-year-old from Crestview,
Florida. She was a 1957 graduate of Crest-
view High, and the following year she
worked as bookkeeper and writer of society

Speak at Junior-Senior
Lois Keys, Junior Class President, an
nounced today that the Junior-Senior Ban
quet would be held May 9, at the Battery
Park Hotel, in Asheville. This affair, which
is the highlight of the college year for jun
iors and seniors, will be an even more
memorable occasion this year, since it is
the last for some time to come.
Mr. Philip Howerton, past Moderator of
General Assembly, has been engaged as the
speaker for the evening. He is a layman
from Charlotte, N. C., and has travelled
extensively throughout the Church this year
while serving as Moderator.
Entertainment will be centered around
an Arabian Nights’ theme. Among the
artists apearing that night will be Charlotte
Dodd, Martha Kinney, and Ben Jenkinson.
The banquet will begin at 6:30 P.M.
Dress will be formal. Arrangements have
been made for dancing after the banquet for
those who wish to remain.
