/C yy/t ■ ■ --St ^9 - VOL. 2, NO. 6 MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA SEPTEMBER, 1959 North Carolina leads Student Body “Where did you say your hometown was? . . . .Oh, you! Another Floridian!” We hear this familiar phrase richocheting from the halls of Montreat for the first few weeks of school. To help you keep your friends geographically straight, try wading through these statistics and see whose dialect fits which state. From the “old North State” there are fifty-two students. South Carolina has sent us twelve of her “Sandlappers” to drink in our brisk mountain air. There are four Georgia “Peaches” as well as four West Virginia “Mountaineers.” Kentucky, Ala bama, Tennessee, and Maryland are each re presented by two of their Southern “belles”. Now hear this: Twenty-one Florida “Ga tors”! We even have a co-ed from Africa and a singing lass from California. Also, there are two — WHAT! YANKEES!!! At least that’s what they claim, but we know the Mason-Dixon Line is in Pennsyl vania and not Maryland. Our sixteen extension students are all from North Carolina. Welcome aboard Freshmen Attend "Grand Ole Opry" Howdee ! ! ! For a rousing big welcome to our Freshmen, the Cabinet members and other council members staged a stup endous production of the Grand Ole’ Opry on Monday night, September 7. Dot Mc- Googan was mistress of ceremonies for the Hillbilly “hit parade”. After a little exhibition from the fancy stepping square dancers, we met that ver satile “Minnie Pearl”, alias Charlotte Dodd, who gave us the lowdown on her love life. After this chronicle “Minnie” and her “cousin” Rod Brassfield (John Ireson) gave their rendition of “How Many Times”. By then everyone needed a commercial, brought to us by our Tuberose girl, Marcia Hudson, backed by Glenn Camp and John Ireson. These two boys, better known as Jerry and Lee, gave us a piano duet next, with John singing “You Win Again”. Things were brought to a close with a “Mountain Dew” finale, with Bettye Hamp ton, Marcia, Glenn, and John leading. Dot invited everyone to a slice of water melon for the end of an evening of fun.
