C, VOL. 2, NO. 8 MONTREAT COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA NOVEMBER, 1959 Homecoming Features Alumni Homecoming Day gets underway with the commencement of the Worship Service at 10:00 a.m. in Gaither Chapel. Rev. A. F. Forgarty is bringing the message. Familiar faces have been appearing on the campus all day. Approximately fifty former Montreat students returned for this gay occasion. Mixed emotions of joy and thankfulness can be seen everywhere as students are reunited with friends of the past. The big soccer game between the Varsity and the Alumni begins at 2:00 p.m. this af ternoon. In the past years, the Varsity has, by a narrow margin, defeated the Alumni. With so many Alumni lettermen participat ing today, this is sure to prove a most exciting game. A special group leading the cheers includes Ellen Mize, Carol Chupp, Mary Ellen Sproles, Doris Peterson, Celeste Rogerson, Barbara Young, Sanda McRae, Nancy Robertson, Betty Ayers, and Nancy Parker. Jewish Leader Will Lecture Students Rabbi Meyer H. Marx, spiritual leader of Temple Beth El in Knoxville, Tennessee, will give a lecture to the student body December 5, 8:00 p.m., in Gaither Chapel. His topic is “What Every Christian Should Know About Judaism”. This is an official college function. Rabbi Marx was educated at the Uni versity of Cinninnati and Howard College in Birmingham, Alabama. He was ordain ed a rabbi by Hebrew Union-Jewish In stitute of Religion in 1938. Tlie rabbi, who has had articles publish ed in the Synagogue, New Orleans Jewish Leader, Pulpit Digest, and in the National .Jewish Post, is presently serving as spirit ual leader of Temple Beth El in Knoxville. Prior to this he served congregations in Mississippi, Nebraska, Illinois and Alabama. At the present time Rabbi Marx is visit ing lecturer in Judaism in the School of Religion at the University of Tennessee and is Hillel Counselor to the Jewish stu dents at the University. The National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods sponsors the Jewish Chautau qua Society, an organization which creates better understanding of Jews and Judaism through education. After Rabbi Marx’s lecture a coffee hour will be sponsored by the CCUN. STUDENTS CASE M.C. PROSPECTIVE STUDENT WEEKEND Prospective student weekend is looked forward to, not only by the prospective students but by the students and faculty members here at Montreat. It gives one a chance to meet some of the future Mon treaters and show them the beautiful cam pus. They receive the chance to see and take part in some of the wonderful activ ities available here at Montreat. Sixteen student attended the prospective student weekend on November 6. They represented three different states: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Activities planned for them included skat ing, games, a marshmallow roast, and a period of devotion which was held in the lobby of Howerton Hall on Friday night. Saturday morning, bright and early, some of the students went on a hike to Lookout Mountain and in the evening attended the Freshmen Talent Show. Sunday morning they worshipped with the student body at morning worship ser vice in Gaither Chapel. After visiting around on campus Sunday afternoon, they returned to their homes. It was nice to have them visit during this most important weekend. The annual Thanksgiving Banquet will be held in the dining room of Assembly Inn. Dr. John Bennett, Dean of Brevard College, will deliver the evening address. Special music will be provided by the Mom treat College Chorus, after which a pres idential reception will be held in the lobby of Assembly Inn in honor of Dr. and Mrs. C. Grier Davis. Friday, the chapel service will be given by the Montreat College Alumni Associa tion. After chapel there will be a Sym posium on “Changing Trends in Christian Education” in Room 12. The discussion will be led by two alumni, Charlotte Os borne and Noel Morse. All students who do not have classes are welcome. Open House will be conducted in both Howerton Hall and the boys’ dormitory from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening. Con cluding the holiday festivities will be a Square Dance at 8:00 p.m. in McAlister Hall. SOCIAL CALENDAR FOR DECEMBER December 5 Rabbi Meyer H.
