Dialette Salutes Dr. Davis
Dr. C. Grier Davis
Now that Dr. C. Grier Davis has actively
assumed his duties and responsibilities as
our new president, Montreat students are
always glad when this very busy man finds
time to talk with them. Dr. Davis’ inter
esting life has been one of great service
and accomplishment.
He was born in Wilmar, Arkansas, where
he grew up and graduated from high school.
Having attended Hendrix College in Con
way, Arkansas, for one year, he transferred
to Davidson where he received his B.A.
in 1927. In the summers from 1925 to
1930, Dr, Davis worked with Dr. W. Moore
Scott, Superintendent of Home Missions for
the Synod of Arkansas, conducting revival
meetings in the churches. He also held
this position during the year of 1928-29,
between college and seminary, in order
to pay back money which he had borrowed
to finish school. In 1928-29, Dr. Davis at
tended Princeton Theological Seminary and
from 1929 to 1931, he studied at Union
Theological Seminary where he received
B.D., Th.M., and Th.D. degrees.
Mrs. Davis is the former Rebecca Mc
Dowell, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James
D. McDowell, of York, South Carolina. A
graduate of Winthrop College, Mrs. Davis
has done post graduate work in William
and Mary School of Social Work in Rich
mond, Virginia.
Dr. and Mrs. Davis have two sons, Calvin
Grier, Jr., and James McDowell. Calvin
was graduated from Lee Edwards High
school where he was president of Torch
Light. At Davidson, where Calvin finish
ed in 1958, he was elected to Omicron
Delta Kappa, was President of Sigma Chi
and the chorus, and edited “Quips and
Pranks”. He later taught in Westminster
schools in Atlanta during the year of 1958-
59. This fall he entered the Graduate
School of the University of North Carolina
on a three year National Defense Scholar
ship to study for his Doctor of Philosophy
degree in the classics. Calvin was mar
ried to Sharon Martin of Louisville,
Kentucky, in August, 1958. They have one
daughter. Heather Elizabeth.
Dr, Davis’ younger son James also grad
uated from Lee Edwards High school. In
the summer of 1957, he was an exchange
student in Sweden under the American
Field Service. Following the Davis tradi
tion, James entered Davidson in 1958. Out
standing Pledge in Sigma Chi during his
freshman year, he is now a member of
the chorus. This summer he will sing in
the Octette and work in the Montreat Book
Store. It is quite evident that Dr. Davis
has a very outstanding family.
In past years Dr. Davis served as the
pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in
Asheville for 21 years; as a member of
the Board of Trustees at Davidson, Mon
treat, and King Colleges; as a member of
the Board of Trustees and Directors of
the Mountain Retreat Association; as a
member of the Board of Managers of THE
LORD’S DAY ALLIANCE; as President of
the Ministers’ Association; as Moderator
