Grier Davis has actively assumed his duties and responsibilities as our new president, Montreat students are always glad when this very busy man finds time to talk with them. Dr. Davis’ inter esting life has been one of great service and accomplishment. He was born in Wilmar, Arkansas, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Having attended Hendrix College in Con way, Arkansas, for one year, he transferred to Davidson where he received his B.A. in 1927. In the summers from 1925 to 1930, Dr, Davis worked with Dr. W. Moore Scott, Superintendent of Home Missions for the Synod of Arkansas, conducting revival meetings in the churches. He also held this position during the year of 1928-29, between college and seminary, in order to pay back money which he had borrowed to finish school. In 1928-29, Dr. Davis at tended Princeton Theological Seminary and from 1929 to 1931, he studied at Union Theological Seminary where he received B.D., Th.M., and Th.D. degrees. Mrs. Davis is the former Rebecca Mc Dowell, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James D. McDowell, of York, South Carolina. A graduate of Winthrop College, Mrs. Davis has done post graduate work in William and Mary School of Social Work in Rich mond, Virginia. Dr. and Mrs. Davis have two sons, Calvin Grier, Jr., and James McDowell. Calvin was graduated from Lee Edwards High school where he was president of Torch Light. At Davidson, where Calvin finish ed in 1958, he was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa, was President of Sigma Chi and the chorus, and edited “Quips and Pranks”. He later taught in Westminster schools in Atlanta during the year of 1958- 59. This fall he entered the Graduate School of the University of North Carolina on a three year National Defense Scholar ship to study for his Doctor of Philosophy degree in the classics. Calvin was mar ried to Sharon Martin of Louisville, Kentucky, in August, 1958. They have one daughter. Heather Elizabeth. Dr, Davis’ younger son James also grad uated from Lee Edwards High school. In the summer of 1957, he was an exchange student in Sweden under the American Field Service. Following the Davis tradi tion, James entered Davidson in 1958. Out standing Pledge in Sigma Chi during his freshman year, he is now a member of the chorus. This summer he will sing in the Octette and work in the Montreat Book Store. It is quite evident that Dr. Davis has a very outstanding family. In past years Dr. Davis served as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Asheville for 21 years; as a member of the Board of Trustees at Davidson, Mon treat, and King Colleges; as a member of the Board of Trustees and Directors of the Mountain Retreat Association; as a member of the Board of Managers of THE LORD’S DAY ALLIANCE; as President of the Ministers’ Association; as Moderator —Turn to Page 4 Emory and Henry Chorus To Visit The Emory and Henry Chorus will be visiting the Montreat campus March 22-23 and will present a concert at 8:00 p.m., Tuesday evening. Approximately 36 mem bers of the chorus will arrive for sup per on Tuesday; the Montreat students will be their hosts. Mr. Charles Davis, the director, is a friend of Mr. Guy, and a cousin of our own president. Dr. C. Grier Davis. John Ireson, presently a Montreat stu dent, was a member of this chorus while he attended Emory and Henry College.
