MONTREAT-ANDERSON COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA
DECEMBER, 1960
ACCREDITATION!
Montreal Accredited
Another milestone was reached in the
history of Montreat-Anderson College when
on December 1, 1960, the Southern Asso
ciation of Colleges and Secondary Schools
conferred accreditation upon our institu
tion. This followed accreditation by the
North Carolina College Conference on Nov
ember 3, 1960.
This accreditation places Montreat-An
derson College on equal status with other
officially recognized junior colleges through
out the nation. This is particularly im
portant to students planning to transfer
to senior colleges.
The committee of the Southern Associa
tion which spent three days in April eval
uating our institution reported that we had
met all fifteen standards. The faculty and
student body were particularly commended
as evidenced by these statements in the re
port: “The faculty attitude was commend
able. The spirit existing among and be
tween the various faculty members was
very good. The loyalty and devotion to the
college was very evident.”
“The morale of the students is very high.
There is a very active student government,
and there is an adequate number of student
activity groups.”
Regarding the academic program, they
stated, “The instructional program is a
sound one. The teachers are enthusiastic,
interested in the individual students, and
capable. The college instructional program,
along with the use of the library, is one of
the strong features of this institution.”
“Records of all the students who had
transferred after two years at this institu
tion were available for study. These stu
dents have done well in other institutions.”
There are several areas where, although
the standard has been met, improvement
is needed. It is in these areas that im
mediate steps will be taken to strengthen
our institution.
Our college community is justly proud
of our institution in attaining this step to
ward our goal. However, Montreat-Ander
son College is not satisfied to meet stand
ards—our college should set the standards.
Transfer Student Outstanding
Though we have only been in Montreat a short time, we have grown very close
to the people around us, especially those like Darlene Davis.
Darlene lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Kearney and her sister
Raye, who is sixteen years old, in Hopewell, Virginia.
While in high school Darelene served as vice president and chaplin of her Tri-
Hi-Y Club, vice president of the Latin Club, secretary of the French Circle, and she
also worked on the Annual Staff.
Before coming to Montreat she attended Longwood College in Virginia. Here
at Mtontreat she is associate advertising manager of the Sun Dial. Darlene is a
hard worker, and her work on the annual has been appreciated greatly by the entire
staff. She also is a faithful member of the church choir and is in the Spiritual Life
S.C.A. group. Aside from the work of her group, she goes with the Evangelistic
group to Lakey Gap every Sunday it is possible. Darlene is very interested in sports
and enjoys participating in the afternoon program offered her at Montreat. Darlene
has a scholarship serving the faculty at the Inn.
Most of the students on campus know Darlene, and they will agree that she is
outstanding in her sweet and unselfish ways. Darlene is one of the most wonderful
Christian girls one could ever know. Christ always comes first in her life. When
ever any of her friends have problems, they know they can go to Darlene, for she
is always ready to help others and always has a word of cheer. It is evident from
these words of praise which have come from her friends, that Darlene Davis most
definitely deserves the honor of the Outstanding Personality of the month of December.
Lefs Pay Tribute To,..
In the world of Montreat, where we are
in the process of acquiring an education,
we don't stop to thank those who are re
sponsible for making this possible. We
are acquiring an education in an atmos
phere of Christianity, peace, and a feeling
of belonging. Let us take a few moments
to recognize and show our appreciation to
one who helps to offer us all this and more.
She graduated from Montreat College
and has proven her love of Montreat and
her students. She works with the individ
ual and not the group; thus she shows her
desire to know each student personally.
She is always willing to help in any way,
the solving of the problems of the students.
She is understanding and accepts each stu
dent as she is.
She is a true Christian. It shines forth
in her every walking step. A Christian
of love, understanding, trust, and faith..
