^60-61 Superlatives
. . . And Jesus increased in Wisdom,
and Stature, and in favor with God and
man ...”
These words taken from our Bible give
us the basis for our election of super
latives each year. These four: wisdom,
stature, favor with God, and favor with
man, are the four ways a Christian should
grow. We are very happy to have Brenda
Overman, as receipient of Joy in Learn
ing; Mary Carswell, for Sportsmanship;
Ann Harbour, as True Spiritual Vision, and
Beth Rose for Most Gracious.
These girls are worthy to be named this,
and we are proud to have them to repre
sent us.
In the coldness of a January morning.
Montreat students tried to visualize the
beauteous warmth of a May day, and who
among our lovely girls would best repre
sent such a day.
Dale Grethen, a lass who radiates the
sunshine of her hometown, Miami, Florida,
was elected to bear the coveted title of
May Queen. The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. J. P. Grethen said, “I still can’t be
lieve it—I’m just floating on clouds”. The
president of the sophomore class is also
a member of the Montreat Chorus.
“This is the most wonderful thing that
has ever happened to me—I’m going to
cry”, were the sincere words of the Maid
of Honor, Anne Gilliland, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. George L. Gilliland of Birming
ham, Alabama. Majoring in music, Ann
is accompanist with the chorus and a
member of the Music Club.
The two freshmen representatives are
blond and fair. Although Judi Foils,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Foils of
Lawranceburg, Indiana, was Homecoming
Queen of her high school and president
of the Boosters Club, she was “shocked”
at the honor bestowed upon her.
Another beauty queen from high school
is Sara Bird, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.
E. Bird of Thomasville, North Carolina.
Sara was Queen of the Fall Festival and
a drum majoret for her high school. At
Montreat she is in the chorus and a re
presentative to the Dorm Council.
The daughter of Mrs. Mary Rose of Mi-
The Dialette Staff on behalf of the
students, faculty, and administration
wish to extend its most sincere
sympathy to the family of Howard
Anderson. Howard was a freshman,
killed in an automobile accident on
December 19, 1960.
ami, Beth expressed her gratefulness for
the honor of being a sophomore attendant.
The dark beauty of Beth was seen last
year as she was Maid of Honor in the
May Court festivities. Beth is active on
the S.C.A. Council, the W.R.A. Board, and
her soprano voice is heard in the chorus.
On the W.R.A. Board, singer in the
chorus, and recipient of North Carolina
State Homemakers award in high school,
Linda Parnell was elected to help repre
sent the sophomores in the pageantry. The
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Parnell, Linda
hails from Red Springs, North Carolina.
These six beauties melt the coldness of
January and bring always into their pres
ence the charm and warmth of a May Day.
Tragedy Mars Holiday
On the night of December 19, 1960, a
tragic accident occured which resulted in
the death of a Montreat freshman, Howard
Anderson and a Black Mountain youth,
Harley Meridith.
The accident occured outside the Mon
treat gate and involved five Montreat
coeds who were in the college station
wagon. Most seriously injured was Betty
Joann “Boats” Manning of Jessup, Georgia.
“Boats” is suffering from broken bones
in her face and ankles. Her roommate,
Brenda Brevard from Hendersonville,
North Carolina, received lacerations of the
head and arm (she severed a tendon in
her left arm). Darlene Davis is wearing
a neck brace to speed her recovery from
a chipped vertebrae in her neck. Sandy
Scott and Gerry Jones suffered from
shock, cuts and bruises.
“Boats” plans to be in Room 111 at
Memorial Mission Hospital for quite awhile
and would enjoy any cards or letters any
readers might send her.
