MONTREAT-ANDERSON COLLEGE, MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA
FEBRUARY, 1961
E
The week of February 20-24 has been
set aside on the Montreat activity calendar
as Spiritual Emphasis week. It is a tra
dition at Montreat to have such a week
w'hereby the campus can step aside from
its hurried routine and take time for the
spiritual side of life.
The students and faculty of Montreat
are honored to have the Reverend Phil
Esty, the associate pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church of Memphis, Tennessee
to lead us in this week of worship. Rev.
Esty has done extensive work with the stu
dents at the University of Georgia, and
he has worked with young people at many
conferences and camps. The Rev. Esty
will speak at the morning Chapel service
at 10:00 and each evening at 7:30. Fire
side discussions are being planned in the
lobby of Howerton Hall. The Rev. Esty
will be happy to talk privately with any
one who so desires.
Welcome, Neiv Students
As students began returning to school
after the semester break, they found that
several new faces had been added to the
campus. It is our privilege to welcome
you to Montreat, and we hope that your
stay will prove as fruitful as have ours
who have been here before.
BECKY ADKINS hails from Marion,
North Carolina, and is a transfer student
from North Carolina Woman’s College.
ROBERTA DEBNAM started her first
semester of college life this semester. She
is from Aiken, South Carolina.
DAPHNE JOLLEY from Black Mountain,
North Carolina, is a transfer student from
Greenville Nurses’ School in Greenville,
South Carolina.
This issue of the DIALETTE is especially
dedicated to prospective students. It is
hoped that through this paper that you
will get to know more about college life
in general and specifically about life at
Montreat-Anderson College.
College is a place of great advancement,
not only in the knowledge of books, but
in personal maturity, fellowship, and
Christian spirit.
We, the members of the DIALETTE
Staff, have attempted to present to you
some of these phases of college life as
they are found at Montreat. We hope you
will enjoy them enough to come and see
Montreat for yourself.
Melhodist Men
Visit Montreal Campus
Do you remember all those men that
were here the first week of the semester?
Well, they were Methodist people. Yes, a
whole group of Methodists on this per
fectly good Presbyterian campus. Well,
I interviewed a few of them and they gave
me a few of their ideas on their ideal
Christian college. Opportunities for indi
vidual spiritual development was one such
idea. Another said he thought it should
prepare one for a good Christian life. ,I
believe this last suggestion will be more
pondered upon than either of the others,
it was, NO COMPULSORY CHAPEL!!
Also in the interview a few points about
their youth groups were brought out. Their
college group, as the Presbyterian West
minister Fellowship, is called the Wesley
Foundation, and their other youth groups
are called the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
These groups have work camps, travel
