The weeks of February were filled with
enthusiastic interest as various students
were considered and reconsidered for the
positions of leadership of the student gov
ernment.
Frank Powell is the second male in the
history of the college to be elected to the
outstanding position of president of the
Cabinet and of the student government.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Claren Powell
of Red Springs, North Carolina, has been
prominent in student activities this year.
Frank is vice-president of the Freshman
class, on the social committee, a member
of the Montreat Singers, a library assist
ant, and was recognized as the Outstanding
Personality of January.
The office of president of the S.C.A.
(Student Christian Association) went to a
male student from Black Mountain, North
Carolina, J. R. Payne. J. R., who has
lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Lewis Payne since the death of his mother,
is a Christian Education major. J. R. has
an outstanding record in his church and
school activities. He is also the Outstand
ing Personality of this month. (See page
3.)
The Woman’s Recreation Association is
proud to name Sandy Scott as their leader
for the year of 1961-62. Sandy, the daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Orvil Scott of Hialeah,
Florida, has been active in athletics since
her high school days where she was chap
lain of the city Girls’ Athletic Association.
At Montreat Sandy has been most active
in W.R.A. activities and will be a credit
to her post.
Janee Howard of Asheville, North Caro
lina, was named to fill the office of editor
of the school yearbook. The Sun Dial. The
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Howard
actively participated in the North Carolina
Drama Festival, North Carolina Choral
Festival, and was news editor of her high
school newspaper. Janee has the lead role
in the play “Family Portraits” to be pre
sented May 6. Majoring in psychology and
Christian Education, Janee’s vivacious man
ner will be a pleasant addition to the
S.G.A. Cabinet.
The future editor of the Dialette is one
of many and varied interests. The daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. James Wildermuth,
Judy is known on campus for her spirited
interest concerning campus activities. Judy,
who was active in her church as youth
group leader and as a part-time secretary,
is majoring in Christian Education. Judy
hails from Rock Mount, North Carolina,
and is a fine choice for such a position.
'Ihe social chairman for next year is one
who has had plenty of experience. Equip-
ed with a deep, almost bass voice and an
overflowing personality, Nancy “Sam”
Whittemore comes to us from Easly, South
Carolina. Serving on the Cabinet will not
be a new experience for the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. David Whittemore, for she
is president of the Freshman class this
year. “Sam” was very actvie in her high

Billy Graham Speaks
The chapel programs this semester have
been most interestingly presented by a
variety of learned and famous people.
Wednesday, April 19, the students, fa
culty, and interested residents of Montreat
heard the world-famous evangelist and
resident of Montreat speak to them on
“Convictions”. Billy Graham told of some
of his experiences with the college stu
dents in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Easter
weekend. It was his opinion that the
young people of today need convictions—
“a slogan to pronounce, and a flag to
follow”. Dr. Graham said if people would
keep Jesus Christ ever in their minds
that they would have convictions.

With Spring Comes
htay Day
After winter comes the days of spring.
Spring, often thought the most beautiful
of all seasons, is especially welcome on
the Montreat-Anderson campus after
months of ice and snow. With the first
bright greeting of the daffodils and the
simple beauty of the white and pink dog
wood trees the campus buzzes with prep
arations for May Day.
As is usual, the weekend of May 5, 6,
and 7 will be quite an active one. Many
guests composed of parents, friends, and
prospective students are expected. The
