In 1^13 a great many members of the Mountain R'eatreat Association felt that the property and fa cilities were being wasted during the winter season. That year they approved the formation of a two- year woman’s college,. In October of 191ii, the school opened its first session with eight female students, and in 1917 the college was finally char tered by the State o f North Carolina as a teach er’s school. The original name of the school was the"MantrB at Normal School' but was Eor- ganized in 193U as "Mon treat C o 1 l.e g e." The school was accredited at this time as a high school and a junior college with one year of teacher train ing. In 1933 there were 30 college students and 50 high school students. Within eleven yeaPs t h e school became a full four- year college. The women of Montreat College led a gay but lonely life until 1957 when the school became of ficially ' coeducational.
