DECEMBER, 1967 THE DIALETTE PAGE 3 THE of LIGHTER SIDE James Moore Have you heard? Christmas vacat ion has been called off. Yes, the faculty and a select number of stu dents, three to be exact, voted and decided to omit the Christmas vacat ion and add the time onto the Easter vacation. The fact that all the stu dents were day students didn’t have anything to do with the decision, I was told. There are several advantages to the change WHAT? I don’t know, but there must be some some where! Oh well, all is not lost. Mon treat has many things to offer dur ing the Christmas season-like, the FLU, FROST BITE, COLD ROOMS etc. Be sure to have your presents mailed to you early so you will have them by Christmas; in fact, they should have been mailed last week! The Montreat Post Office closes Dec ember 15th so Mrs. Solomon will have enough time to visit her child ren in Moosejaw, Alaska. TOO BAD! ON THE SERIOUS SIDE: We are glad to see Miss Smith back after her operation and back to the old grind of teaching math. We also want to put out the welcome mat for Mom Perkins, new house mother over at good old Fellowship hall.Mom is not new face to the Montreat campus by a long shot—she was here many moons ago keepin’ law and order over at Fellowship when it was a boys dorm; but it has been a long time since she’s been here. WELCOME MOM AND MISS SMITH, WE’RE GLAD TO HAVE YOU BOTH BACK!! A long kept secret has gotten out. I am really hesitant as to whether I will spill the beans, ‘cause I know I will be murderized when this secret-keepin’ party reads her, secret right here in BOLD type. Oh well, what’s life without a few risks now and then? Here goes—MOM Hodge’s full name, it was discover ed today, is ORPHIT MYRTLE HORNBECK HODGE (I hope I spelt that right.) There’s no need to talk to Dean Kester, Mom, I’m pack ing!! It was brought to our attention that several names were left out or mispelled in our last issue, and since this is the ouly column EVERYBODY reads (Ho, Ho) I have been appoint ed to write the retraction: The omission of Nanci Berming- ham’s name as being a new member of the Merri-Macs. The mispelling of Jeanne Clark’s name under the homecoming pictur.e The mispelling of Suzanne Swearingen’s name under the cheerleader’s picture. We are sincerely sorry girls!!! Really we are!!! It seems that the last two months have been BIG months for crime in and around Montreat. Last month Mrs. Woody was jailed for stealing two typewriters, and this month Mrs. EAPm NM.YEAR IRISH, FRAN FRED & TERRY Mitchell has been charged with break ing and entering; and contributing to the deliqeuncy of minors. On the night of Monday Nov. 27th, Mrs. Mitchell asked a group of girls if they would like to go for a swim. After they agreed to go, the girls were taken to In The Oaks, Episco pal Conference Center, in Black Mountain. When they arrived at In The Oaks, Mrs. Mitchell tried to open the door to the swimming pool room. Finding it locked, she became quite hostile. She went to the near est window, which was two feet away, and tore the screen off-threw the window open and proceeded to climb in. When she finally opened the door there stood CAPTAIN BIBLE. Mrs. Mitchell, seeing that her plan had been foiled, began to run. Within minutes CAPTAIN BIBLE had captured and returned her to Montreat where she is now awaiting her upcoming trial. After hearing of the incident, Mr. Mitchell was quoted as, saying, “When I met Grace, while climbing the Andes Mountains, I never knew it would turn out like this!” Perhaps the frequent visite to SHONEY’S corrupted her, Mr. Mitchell. The Holiest Car On Campus A- ward this month, goes to Miss Anne Rouzie, with Miss Bev Keith’s car as runner-up. HAPPY HOLIDAYS BEACON BLANKETS SWANNANOA, N. C. Black Mountain Drug Co. This is a question that has plagued man since the dawn of time. Scholars have thought and puzzled and come up with many dif ferent answers. But recent research has uncovered some new and refresh ing ideas. Here is what the “men” of Montreat - Anderson College have to say. Possibly the most common answer was: “True beauty lies in a woman’s personality.” This was expressed by Bob Barrett, Steve Gragg, Gary Tay lor, Danny Daniel, Terry Grice, Van Dotson, Paul Thrift, Bill Jones, Paul Terwiliger and Bill Woody. Less thoughtful ones were: “True beauty lies in her heart.” John Young “In her face” Neil Wilkerson “In her attitude” Johnny Gilbert “In her eyes” John Schimmel “In the way she makes you feel like a man” Woody West The most profound answers were given after much thought: Frank Glenn says “True beauty lies in her pocketbook.” Fred Green thinks “it’s between her face and her figure.” “It’s in her mouth,” says Neely Barry “No,” argues Everett Land, “It’s in her hair.” Doug VanBrookHoven almost agrees and says, “it’s under her hair.” Bob Burgess decided “it lies in her hips,” But Bo Lowry solved the whole controversy by telling us that “true beauty in a woman lies from her feet up.” ULYSSES, THE SEARCH The motion picture, “Ulysses” is probably one of the most powerful motion pictures that has been made in the year 1967. The motion picture is based on the controvelsial best-seller by James Joyce. It is the story of one man’s search for human dignity. It if a search which grips the audience and causes most of them to become un easy because they realize that this picture is speaking for them. In this story reality is brought out more keenly than in any motion picture that this reviewer has seen. Most of he dialouge and action take place in the minds of the characters and are brought out through a stream-of-consciousness technique. In taking an overall look at the mot ion picture this reviewer finds some parts which were good but which could have been better. For example, the dialogue in the beginning was quite hard to understand. This made the audience incapable of compre hending all that they should have. The dialogue was raw in places but when we deal with the human minds as Joyce did we can not cen sor our thoughts to make everything sound nice. “Ulysses” is the motion picture which should be seen by the intelli gent-minded adult and not the child ish person who is only looking for trash. It contains lines which will haunt the viewer long after the movie is ended. “Ulysses” is a motion picture which will cause much controversy but in the end it comes down to whether we want to accept reality or try and make ourselves believe something that actually it not the truth. ^t's c very cheery Merry Chrlflmai weVe wishing all-our fine cusfomert, and an especially sincere "thanks” for your patronage.
